Goaltender Chris Osgood suffered just his fourth defeat of the season (19-2-2) and allowed a season-high five goals on 28 shots. Osgood was making his first start since being named to the Western Conference All-Star team and signing a three-year, $4.25-million contract extension earlier in the week.
The game didn't start out well for the Red Wings as the club fell behind 3-1 in the first period before Valtteri Filppula's beautiful effort cut the deficit to 3-2 with just 28 seconds remaining in the period. Minnesota scored goals 15 seconds apart (Marion Gaborik and Todd Fedoruk) after Wild defenseman Martin Skoula and Henrik Zetterberg traded goals early in the period.
Minnesota regained the two goal advantage three minutes into the second period with a goal from Matt Foy. The Red Wings came storming back later in the period, with Dallas Drake scoring his second goal of the season (shorthanded) on a hard wrist shot from the left circle. Niklas Kronwall tied the game just 1:06 later.
After the goal Nicklas Backstrom, who started the game for Minnesota, was pulled in favor of Josh Harding after stopping just 15 of 19 shots.
The game remained tied until 1:08 left in regulation when Dan Cleary pounced on a rebound off a shot from Jiri Hudler and scored past Harding to give Detroit a 5-4 lead.
It would last just 19 seconds.
Minnesota's Eric Belanger wasted little time in tying the game. Belanger gloved down a loose puck next to the crease as the Wild swarmed the Detroit and banked the puck into the net off a sprawling Osgood to knot the score at 5-5.
Following an overtime session the two sides went to a shootout. Only Jiri Hudler succeeded for the Red Wings (Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk were stopped on their attempts) while Brian Rolston scored on his shot and Gaborik sealed the victory by scoring five-hole on Osgood.
The Red Wings outshot the Wild 46-28 and got a strong relief effort from Harding (26 saves on 27 shots). The Detroit power continues to struggle and finished 0-for-5. Minnesota was 0-for-3.
