Daniel Alfredsson's power-play goal with with 2:56 remaining in regulation broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Ottawa Senators to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Red Wings Saturday night.
The regulation loss to a non-Central Division was just the second for the Red Wings this season (Oct. 13th at Anaheim). The Senators wasted little time getting the lead in the game when Alfredsson scored his first of the night just 1:09 into the game when his point shot on a power-play eluded a screened Dominik Hasek. Ottawa made it 2-0 early in the second period when Mike Fisher was sprung on a breakaway and scored on his own rebound for his 16th of the season.
Detroit's power play was abysmal through the first 40 minutes of play, going 0-for-5 as it continues to struggle.
The power play, however, clicked in the third period to help kickstart the Red Wings two-goal comeback. Brian Rafalski was the beneficiary of a beautiful play from Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk for his 8th goal. Zetterberg, who was pinned against the far boards with two Ottawa penalty killers, kicked the puck to Datsyuk in the right faceoff circle. Datsyuk quickly made a blind backhand pass to Rafalski, who had sneaked in from the point and was wide open in the slot. Rafalski made no mistake, placing a perfect shot high glove side on goaltender Ray Emery.
Jiri Hudler tied the game when he ripped a loose puck from the left faceoff circle passed a screened Emery at 1:06.
A holding penalty on Nicklas Lidstrom set up what would be he deciding power play in the game. Alfreddson corralled a loose puck along the side boards to the left of Hasek and ripped a shot along the ice that found its way though a crowd and inside the far post for his 28th goal of the season.
The Red Wings finished 1-for-6 on the power play while Ottawa closed out at 2-for-5.
Hasek finished 29 saves as Senators counterpart Emery finished with 27.
