Detroit grabbed the lead after the first 20 minutes despite getting outplayed and badly out-shot by the host Kings, 12-6, when Tomas Holmstrom slapped home a one-timer off a perfect feed from Pavel Datsyuk at 6:57.
The Red Wings increased the lead to 2-0 in the second period following a solid defensive play by forward Matt Ellis -- subbing for the injured Henrik Zetterberg -- that freed the puck up for Samuelsson along the right side of the neutral zone. Once entering the Los Angeles zone Samuelsson rifled a quick wrist shot that beat goaltender Jason Labarbera high to the glove side.
Johan Franzen supplied an insurance tally in the third period to close out the scoring.
Detroit improved to 3-0 against the Kings this season.
Labarbera stopped 24 of 27 shots he faced.
Neither squad could score with the extra man, as the Red Wings went 0-for-3 and the Kings 0-for-2 on the power play.
