Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom's apparent game-tying goal with 40 seconds remaining in regulation was disallowed due to incidental contact with the goaltender as the Anaheim Ducks escaped with a 3-2 victory against the Red Wings Sunday afternoon.

Forward Tomas Holmstom screened Ducks netminder Jean-Sebastie Giguere at the top of the crease. Referee Dan O'Halloran, a lightning rod for criticism from the Red Wings' bench and the fans at Joe Louis Arena, waived off the goal. Holmstrom was not penalized on the play.

The disallowed goal was the last in a series of odd calls and no calls from O'Halloran, who failed (along with partner Chris Rooney) to call a goaltender interference penalty on Chris Kunitz in the 2nd period when he knocked a covered puck away from goaltender Chris Osgood with his stick. Osgood claimed that Kunitz kneed him in the head on the play.

Former Red Wing Mathieu Schneider scored on a shot a few seconds aftr Kunitz freed the puck, giving Anaheim a 2-1 lead. The goal was also remarkable for the fact that Kunitz shouldn't have been on the ice -- just over a minute earlier Kunitz throw a gloved punch to the face of Mikael Samuelsson after the whistle when Chris Pronger was called for hooking Samuelsson down in front of the net. The referees called Samuelsson for diving on the play.

The Red Wings grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period when Pavel Datsyuk deflected a shot from Lidstrom past Giguere for his 19th of the season on a Detroit power play. The assist lifted Lidstrom's point total to 13 in the Red Wings' last 9 games.

Anaheim tied the game a few minutes later when Ryan Suter's bad angle shot caught Osgood out of position at 17:49.

Tyler Huskins scored with 4:42 to go in the second period when his shot rebounded off defenseman Brett Lebda and behind Osgood to give Anaheim a 3-1 lead heading into te 3rd period. Two of Huskins' three goals this season have come against the Red Wings -- both in Anaheim victories.

Johan Franzen cut the deficit to 3-2 6:06 into the third period with a power-play goal. Jiri Hudler drew both Anaheim defenseman behind the net, leaving Franzen alone out front. Hudler's quick pass foun Franzen at the top of the goal crease, where he took the puck to his backhand prior to roofing a shot past Giguere for his 11th of the season.

Giguere turned aside 27 of 29 Detroit shots. Osgood turned away just 16 of 19 in taking the loss.

Referees should be fined for such horrible calls! Hold them responsible for thier mistakes! He should have at least blew the whistle with no call to send it to review.

I will never understand this as long as I live. Osgood gets raped for a covered puck and scored on by a guy who sucker punches a player with no call, instead Samuelsson gets sent to the box on a rare "getting punched in the head" minor. Ok, thats fine, apparently they are letting them play tonite, long as the calls go both ways I'm cool. GOAL! WTF! Interference includes outside the crease too? Like listening to Pierre MacGuire give the Ducks the verbal reach around atta-boys all game and the ref's making enough pathetic calls wasn't enough, we get another game decided on a horrible call, not the play on the ice. I believe refs should be fined or have to give public apologies for that kind of ridiculus officiating, because right now they have no recourse. In fact, if I remember right, a NHL coach can be fined for complaining to publicly about the officiating. Its ridiculus... When is the double standard gonna stop? When are refs going to realize that infinite times more goals are falsely disallowed when Holmstrom is in front than those that are falsely allowed when there is interference? Disgusted stll....

I agree. It makes me sick that the refs continually make horrible calls and nothing is ever said or done about it. They found out in the NBA that refs were making calls to throw games. It would be so easy for any ref to take money to make calls. Nobody would ever know any better. The reason nobody would know is because it happens all the time.
I am from Traverse City living in Colorado and these idiots out here are saying it helps the Wings by giving them something to play for? Are you kidding me? Bad calls are bad calls period. When you listen to Mickey Redmond he calls them both ways but most announcers don't. The NBC announcers today were obviously drinking from the Ducks CUPS...

This one really takes the cake. I have never seen such poor officiating in all my life. Even if i got fined, as coach i would have publicly let these refs had it after the game. I dont know if a coach can get a game misconduct, but it would have been well worth it to me!!! The league needs to hold certin refs accountable. It always seems to be against THE WINGS. I guess nobody likes a winner. News flash NHL, the wings will be bringing home the cup weather you want them to or not!!

Dan O'Halloran - Not only can't believe that this guy is officiating, I cannot believe these people are allowed to make ANY decisions in life What so ever! Not only should he have been fined, but each Red Wings player should be able to take one slap shot at his balls! I am so sick of crappy officials.
