The Red Wings lost for the fifth-straight game Friday night in a disappointing effort against the Columbus Blue Jackets that resulted in a 5-1 defeat.
Chris Osgood was pulled for the second-straight game after allowing four goals on 13 shots.
Modin added his second goal of the game at the 11:12 mark of the second period that ended the night for Osgood, who was replaced by call-up netminder Jimmy Howard.
Howard was strong in his first appearance of the season in a relief effort in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Nashville Predators when he turned aside 18 of 19 shots. Howard was strong in net again on Friday and allowed only defenseman Ron Hainsey's goal in the third period. Howard stopped nine of 10 Columbus shots he faced.
Pavel Datsyuk scored the only goal for the Red Wings when he found the back of the net past Pascal Leclaire 1:25 into the third period on a Detroit power play.
Leclaire put in a solid effort with the Blue Jackets with 20 saves on 21 shots.
