The Red Wings not only lost Friday night's game in Calgary by a 1-0 score, they may have also lost another veteran on the blueline when defenseman Chris Chelios took a hard shot off the back of his right leg in the first period and didn't return. The shutout marked the second time in three games Detroit has failed to score.
Alex Tanguay's fluke score midway through the first period was the lone goal on a night in which the Red Wings' young defensemen put on a strong effort. Chelios was only able to amass 3:13 of ice time before leaving the game permanently with just over eight minutes remaining in the first period.
Fresh call-up Jonathon Ericsson played 22:46 on the night while Derek Meech (20:30) and Kyle Quincey (16:13) had strong efforts.
The Flames received an outstanding effort in net from goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, who stopped all 38 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of the season.
The Red Wings slowly took over the game in the final 30 minutes and most notably in the 3rd period when Detroit outshot the host Flames 13-2, but were unable to get anything past Kiprusoff. Jiri Hudler and Pavel Datsyuk each rang shots of the goalposts in the final period.
Not lost in the game was another strong performance in net by Chris Osgood, who has bounced back nicely in his last two starts. Osgood stopped 25 of 26 shots.
