Robert Nilsson scored the only goal during a shootout to lift the Oilers to a 4-3 victory over the Red Wings Tuesday night in Edmonton. The loss, the third in a row for the Red Wings, was particularly painful after Detroit overcame a 2-0 hole to lead 3-2 with under a minute remaining in regulation.
Defenseman Andreas Lilja was pressured by the Edmonton forecheck in the final minute and the result was a minor penalty for delay of game as Lilja's clearing attempt resulted in the puck going over the glass in the defensive zone.
Fernando Pisani scored to tie the game 3-3 while Edmonton had a 6-on-4 advantage with goaltender Mathieu Garon on the bench for the extra attacker.
The Red Wings carried the play in the overtime session but were unable to get the puck past Garon.
After a scoreless first period, Edmonton grabbed the lead when Tom Gilbert scored 2:54 into the middle frame. The Oilers extended the lead to 2-0 early in the third period when Geoff Sanderson was sprung on a partial breakaway.
The Red Wings used a dormant power play to get back into the game. Rookie defenseman Jonathon Ericsson, appearing in just his 3rd NHL game, rocketed a one-timer though Garon at the 5:42 mark following a nice centering feed from Valtteri Filppula.
Pavel Datsyuk tied the game at 12:18 when his shot from the top of the left circle found the top corner of the net behind a screened Garon.
Filppula appeared to have scored what should have been the game-winning goal with just 2:16 left in regulation when he beat Garon from a bad angle at the base of the left faceoff circle.
Lilja's gaffe, however, gave Edmonton an opportunity.
