Injuries ravaging the blueline, non-existant secondary scoring, phantom goaltender interference penalties -- the contributing factors to the Red Wings' astonishing slump certainly aren't few, but what took place Saturday night certainly takes the cake. Devin Setoguchi scored the eventual game-winning goal after the puck rebounded off the protective netting behind the net as the Sharks beat the Red Wings, 3-2.
None of the four on-ice officials blew the play dead despite losing sight of the puck for several seconds. The end result was a puck that dropped softly at the side of goaltender Dominik Hasek -- and was slammed into the net by Setoguchi at 9:17 of the third period.
For reasons unexplainable, the play is not reviewable by the video review official nor the NHL "war room" in Toronto.
The controversial play marred what was an impressive return to the Detroit blueline by Niklas Kronwall, who assisted on both Detroit goals. New Red Wing Brad Stuart also made his debut as Kronwall's partner and was impressive in providing a physical presence on the ice.
Hasek also made his first appearance since February 9th and made 19 saves.
The Sharks built up a 2-0 lead with goals early in the 1st and 2nd periods, each of Detroit turnovers. Joe Pavelski staked San Jose to a 1-0 lead 1:40 into the game when his quick shot from between the circles eluded Hasek's glove.
Setoguchi made is 2-0 just 52 seconds into the middle frame.
Henrik Zetterberg pulled the Red Wings to 2-1 with his 36th goal at 2:26 of the second. Zetterberg redirected a hard pass from Kronwall on a power play past goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.
Setoguchi's goal off the protective netting gave the Sharks a 3-1 lead.
Mikael Samuelsson brought Detroit to within 3-2 with a 5-on-3 power play goal at 12:53, but the Red Wings were unable to solve Nabokov the rest of the way.
Nabokov stopped 20 shots for San Jose, which won its first game against the Red Wings this season.
The loss kept Detroit's narrow lead in the Western Conference race to just three points over the red-hot Dallas Stars.
