Goaltender Dominik Hasek stopped 22 shots and defenseman Niklas Kronwall added two assists as the Red Wings won for just the second time in 12 games with a 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres Sunday night. The Wings also got a goal and assist each from Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen.
The victory kicks off the month of March on a winning note following a disasterous month of February where the Red Wings went just 4-8-2 -- the club's worst stretch of games since 1989-90.
For the second straight game the Red Wings surrendered a goal early, this time off the stick of Buffalo's Patrick Kaleta just 2:59 into the game. The Red Wings answered nine minutes later when Dallas Drake's shot rebounded off a Buffalo defender and got past goaltender Ryan Miller to tie the game 1-1.
The No. 2 power-play unit gave the Red Wings the lead in the second period, with Jiri Hudler sending a nice cross-ice pass to Filppula for his 18th of the season.
A beautiful pass from Kronwall gave Detroit a 3-1 lead later in the period when Johan Franzen finished the play be redirecting the puck into the Buffalo net past a prone Miller at 14:16.
The Sabres cut the lead to 3-2 on an odd play on a Buffalo power play in the third period. Kirk Maltby laid a hard check on Jason Pominville near the penalty boxes that resulted in a scrum. The whistle, however, never blew and Pominville fished the puck out of the crowd and broke in alone on Hasek and beat him through the five hole for his 20th goal of the season.
Maltby later iced the game with 4:08 left with his 4th goal of the season.
Miller turned aside 35 shots as the Red Wings out-shot the Sabres 39-24. Each club finished 1-for-5 on the power play.
