Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and an assist to help spark a Detroit comeback from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Dallas Stars 5-3 Thursday night in Joe Louis Arena. The victory clinched a playoff spot and the eighth-straight season of at least 100 points -- a streak that matches the NHL record originally set by the Montreal Canadiens of 1975-1982. The Red Wings have now won five-straight games to start the month of March after an abysmal 4-8-2 February.
The Stars opened the scoring when defenseman Trevor Daley's point shot found its way through a crowd and past goaltender Chris Osgood, who was screened on the playoff. The Red Wings answered at the 7:46 mark of the period when Detroit needed just six seconds of a power play to have Johan Franzen deflect a point shot past Marty Turco.
Dallas struck early again in the second period when a blind centering feed by Joel Lundqvist to the top of the crease was redirected past Osgood off the stick of Jere Lehtinen. Brendan Morrow gave the Stars a 3-1 lead with 6:18 remaining in the second period when he slammed home a rebound on a Dallas power play.
Datsyuk got the Red Wings within on before the close of the period when he intercepted a loose puck near the top of the right faceoff circle and skated in alone on Turco. The former Wolverine made the initial save but Datsyuk was able to squeeze the rebound past the prone netminder.
The Red Wings started the third period fast and furious and it paid off.
Turco surrendered a weak goal just 36 seconds into the third period when a Datsyuk slapshot fluttered and dipped between Turco's pads to tie the game 3-3. Mikael Samuelsson gave the Red Wings the lead 25 seconds later on a scramble out front for his 11th of the season.
Valtteri Filppula closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal with five seconds left.
Osgood, who started in place of Dominik Hasek (back), made 16 saves on 19 shots. Turco turned aside 26 of 30.
The Red Wings won the regular season series against the Stars, 3-1-0.
