A costly misplay of the puck behind the net helped end the Red Wings' five-game win streak Saturday afternoon when Nashville's Rich Peverley pounced on a loose puck as Chris Osgood was behind the net to give the Predators a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish en route to a 3-1 defeat of Detroit.
The Predators struck first in the game when Dan Hamhuis scored on a superb individual effort. Hamhuis carried the puck down the right side of the Detroit zone, cut in toward Osgood and was able to one-arm the puck short side between the post and Osgood's left pad.
Niklas Kronwall tied the game just over seven minutes later on a give-and-go play with Johan Franzen. After passing off to Franzen at the Nashville blueline, Kronwall slipped in behind the Predators' defense and was able to one-time a pass from his fellow Swede past a sprawling Dan Ellis for a 1-1 tie.
Peverley's fortunate tally took place at the 6:10 mark of the second period. Jerred Smithson added an empty net goal with 18 seconds remaining in the third period to round out the scoring.
Detroit out-shot Nashville 35-27 but was repeatedly thwarted by the stellar netminding of Ellis, who made 34 saves. Osgood turned aside 24 of 26 for the Red Wings.
