Henrik Zetterberg scored three straight goals in the third period, a natural hat trick, to help lift the Red Wings to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets in Detroit Wednesday night. It was the third career hat trick for Zetterberg, who helped the Red Wings over come a 1-0 deficit entering the third period.
The Red Wings, missing four regulars up front (Kris Draper, Tomas Holmstrom, Dan Cleary and Valtteri Filppula), looked lethargic over the first 40 minutes of play and were outshot by the Blue Jackets 19-15 over that span.
Manny Malhotra scored the only goal of the first two periods while the Jackets were on a power play at the 7:05 mark of the second period. The goal was Malhotra's fifth in three games -- including a pair he scored against Detroit on Sunday.
Zetterberg tied the game 6:43 into the third period on a beautiful individual effort. Zetterberg gained the puck entering the Columbus zone and split two defenders before one-handing a shot through Fredrik Norrena's five hole for his 37th of the season.
Zetterberg gave the lead on a Detroit power play with 1:54 remaining when he banged home a nice pass from Pavel Datsyuk following a blocked shot. The Red Wings' leading goal-scorer added two his total 35 seconds later when he stole the puck at center ice, deked around a challenge between the circles by Norrena and wristed the puck into a gaping net.
The goal capped a dominant third period for the Red Wings, a period in which they outshot the Blue Jackets by a 12-4 margin.
Zetterberg wasn't the only Red Wing with a superb effort Wednesday night as goaltender Chris Osgood had several outstanding saves among his 22 saves.
Norrena turned aside 24 of 27 Detroit shots.
