Pavel Datsyuk scored a goal and added two assists as the Red Wings defeated the Blue Jackets 4-1 in Columbus Saturday night. The three-point effort resulted in a new career-high in points for Datsyuk (90). Henrik Zetterberg, who scored in the first period, netted his career-high 40th of the season.
The most impressive mark on the night, however, was that the victory was the Red Wings' 50th of the season -- the third straight season Detroit has accomplished that feat. It's the first time an NHL club has reached the mark since the Montreal Canadiens did four times in a row from 1975-79.
Mike Babcock also became the first head coach ever to record three-straight 50-win seasons with a new team.
The Red Wings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with power play goals 3:39 apart by Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg. Datsyuk and Brian Rafalski assisted on both tallies.
The lead held into the third period until Rick Nash scored his 38th of the season just 43 seconds in.
Johan Franzen thwarted any sign of a Blue Jacket comeback with his 22nd of the season when he deflected Chris Chelios's point shot past Fredrik Norrena at 12:52. Datsyuk closed out the scoring with his first shorthanded goal of the season just over two minutes later.
The Red Wings held the Blue Jackets to a season-low 12 shots on goal. The Red Wings fired 21 at Norrena (17 saves). Dominik Hasek stopped 11 shots.
