Johan Franzen's power-play goal with 11:38 remaining in regulation proved to be the game-winning tally as the Red Wings defeated the host St. Louis Blues 2-1 Tuesday night in the Scottrade Center. The goal gives Franzen 11 goals and 14 points in his last 11 games. Franzen's 23 goals this season is also a career high.
The Red Wings scored the only goal of the opening 20 minutes when Henrik Zetterberg scored his 41st goal of the season off a rebound of a Dan Cleary shot on goal at 15:49. Cleary, who made his return after missing 19 games due to a fractured jaw, played 17:13 with shots and five hits.
The Blues tied the game 1-1 early in the second period when Andy MacDonald was able to outrace Dan Cleary and capitalize for his 16th of the season at the 2:36 mark.
Detroit turned up the pressure in the third period -- outshooting the Blues 12-3 -- and wasted little time capitalizing on a power play midway though the period. Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom's shot from the base of the left circle deflected off the crowd in front of netminder Manny Legace, causing the puck to surprise Legace as it rebounded off his upper chest. The puck dropped to the ice where Franzen, who was battling out front, slammed it into the open net.
The Red Wings outshot the Blues 32-18 for the game in a stifling defensive effort. Legace was sharp, however, in taking the loss. He stopped 30 shots. Osgood, who was equally strong, turned aside 17.
