Brad Boyes scored 2:43 into overtime to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 4-3 overtime victory over the Red Wings Friday night in Joe Louis Arena. The loss halted a four-game win streak for the Red Wings. Fan favorite Darren McCarty also made his season debut with the club and played 5:03.
The Blues built up a 2-0 lead into the second period on goals by Boyes and rookie defenseman Erik Johnson. The Red Wings sprung to life shortly after Johnson made it 2-0, with Brian Rafalski scoring 38 seconds after the St. Louis goal to cut the lead to 2-1.
St. Louis rebuilt the two-goal advantage when Andy MacDonald's shot deflected off a Red Wing and past Chris Osgood at 9:28 for a 3-1 Blues lead. The Red Wings ramped up the pressure thereafter, with Johan Franzen scoring a pair of goals 1:52 apart to tie the game at 3-3 with 4:41 remaining in regulation.
The Red Wings controlled the play most of the game, outshooting the Blues 39-21 -- including 15-7 in the third period alone.
Boyes won it in overtime by beating Osgood over the left pad and under the arm following a beautiful setup from Paul Kariya.
Manny Legace, who was outstanding for St. Louis, stopped 36 shots. Osgood turned aside 17 of 21.
