Johan Franzen capped off an unbelievable month of March with the game-winning goal 3:21 into overtime to lift the Red Wings to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Nashville Predators in a matinee affair in Joe Louis Arena Sunday. Th goal was the sixth game-winning goal of the month for Franzen -- a mark that broke legend Gordie Howe's previous franchise record.
Howe, who turns 80 on Monday, was honored by the Red Wings prior to the game with a ceremony.
The goal gives Franzen 14 goals in his last 13 games, including a month of March that closes out with 17 points in 12 games.
The two clubs went scoreless through regulation due to strong performances in goal from Nashville's Dan Ellis and Detroit's Dominik Hasek, who made his first start since recovering from a severe case of the flu. Ellis was especially strong, repeatedly robbing forward Jiri Hudler in the first and second periods to highlight his 35-save effort.
Hasek's best save of the afternoon came on the Predators' Ryan Suter, who skated in alone on Hasek but was stonewalled by the right pad 100 seconds into overtime.
Franzen ended the game when he banged home a loose puck from in front of the Nashville crease, leaving Ellis sprawling for the puck but unable to stop it before crossing the goalline.
Hasek stopped all 22 shots his faced for his 81st shutout of his NHL career.
