The word on Kirk Maltby's injury is out and he's been sidelined with a strained hamstring, reports the Macomb Daily's Bruce MacLeod. When Maltby will return to the lineup is unknown -- he could very well be held out until the start of the playoffs like fellow forward Kris Draper (groin). Tomas Holmstrom, who won't play tonight, is expected to play in Sunday's season finale.
An update on Justin Abdelkader's amateur tryout contract signed earlier today: it effectively ends his career as a Michigan State Spartan. Abdelkader, who is very close on a three-year entry-level contact that should be finalized over the next 36 hours, said he was excited to join the Red Wings in a press statement published by College Hockey News:
"It's an amazing feeling to realize my dream of being a Red Wing, and I would like to thank the Detroit organization... On the flip side, it's difficult to leave Michigan State. My three years there were the best of my life, and not only from a hockey standpoint.
"I'm proud that we were able to win a National Championship, and was thrilled to have the opportunities that were given to me not only by the coaching staff, but also within the University. I want to thank everyone who has been incredibly supportive of me over the last three years."
