The injury bug continues to ravage the Red Wings' forward lines and Thursday's game against Columbus was no exception: forward Tomas Kopecky, the team leader in hits, has been lost for the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL and spraining his MCL in the third period last night. Kopecky will have surgery to repair the damage once the swelling reduces in the knee and is expect to recover in 4-6 months.
“He’s a big body,” Holland told George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press. “We’ll miss him. Our depth is getting tested up front.”
Holland isn't kidding: The Red Wings signed prospect Justin Abdelkader to a one-game amateur tryout contract prior to Thursday's game due in part to the partially torn hamstring of Kirk Maltby, who will be out 10 days and is likely to miss the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs that open next week.
Maltby added to a list that includes Tomas Holmstrom (groin; will return for regular season finale), Kris Draper (groin; will return for Game 1 next week), Brad Stuart (finger; will be back for Game 1) and Mikael Samuelsson (groin; no timetable, may be available for Game 1).
