Dallas scraps for Game 4 win

Mike Modano and Brendan Morrow each scored third-period goals to help lift the Dallas Stars to a 3-1 victory and avoid a four-game sweep in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals Wednesday night. After getting their first lead of the series with 22 seconds left in the second period, the Stars surrendered the lead 49 seconds into the third when Henrik Zetterberg scored his 10th of the playoffs to tie the game.

The game, however, was not without controversy early as the Red Wings had a power-play goal and a 1-0 lead erased by a phantom goaltender interference call on Tomas Holmstrom. Holmstrom, who has routinely parked in front of goaltender Marty Turco throughout the series, was in position outside the Dallas crease when Pavel Datsyuk's shot found the back of the net midway through the second period.

Dallas grabbed the lead in the final minute of the middle frame when Stephane Robidas shot from the right faceoff circle deflected off Loui Eriksson in th crease and past Chris Osgood.

Zetterberg scored on a rush from the left faceoff dot off a feed from Pavel Datsyuk to quickly tie the game in the third period.

A critical turnover in the neutral zone by Brian Rafalski gave Dallas a chance to regain the lead when he mishandled the puck and was forced to trip Brad Richards at center ice. With Dan Cleary without a stick while on the penalty kill the Stars took advantage when Sergei Zubov found Modano alone between the circles for a perfect one timer to the top of the net.

Morrow scored an insurance marker with 5:26 left following another Detroit turnover as Mikael Samuelsson failed to clear the defensive zone.

The disallowed goal notwithstanding, the Red Wings finished an abysmal 0-for-6 on the powe play. Dallas finished 1-for-4.

Turco played his best game of the series as Detroit peppered him with 34 shots. Osgood turned aside 19 of 22 in his first loss of the playoffs.
