It's a series now. Joel Lundqvist's second-period goal proved to be the game-winner as the Red Wings lost at home for the first time in the playoffs Saturday afternoon as the Dallas Stars pulled within a game of tying the series with a 2-1 win in Game 5. The victory was goaltender Marty Turco's first in Joe Louis Arena in his NHL career. Game 6 is Monday night in Dallas.
The Red Wings offense has suddenly turned anemic in the last two games after putting 11 goals in the Dallas net during the first three games of the series when Detroit raced to a 3-0 series lead. Detroit outshot Dallas 39-21 in the game and won 41 faceoffs to the Stars' 20 but it was critical mental errors that cost the Red Wings Saturday afternoon.
Dallas opened the scoring at the 9:21 mark of the first period as Detroit failed to come out strong before a racuous home crowd. Defenseman Trevor Daley followed up late on an odd-man rush and beat goaltender Chris Osgood -- who made several spectacular saves earlier in the game to keep Dallas off the board -- for a 1-0 Dallas lead.
The Red Wings tied the game up later in the first period when Jiri Hudler banged home a rebound of his own shot following a nice feed from defenseman Niklas Kronwall.
Detroit was outshot 8-3 though the first 10 minutes of the period but finished the opening frame with a 14-8 advantage.
Dallas took the lead six minutes into the second period following a horrendous line change decision by Chris Chelios that resulted in a rush for the Stars. Lundqvist opted to hold onto the puck and ripped a quick wristshot that beat Osgood to the stick side for his second goal of the playoffs.
Detroit continued to out-shoot the Stars in the middle frame with a 13-6 advantage and again in the third with a 12-4 advantage, but the team was unable to get a puck by Turco, sho stopped 38 shots in his best performance of the series.
Osgood turned aside 19 shots in suffering his second-straight loss.
