If there's one thing to take from the Penguins' Game 2 performance Monday night, it's this: They're better at scoring punches on Johan Franzen's head than they are goals. Goaltender Chris Osgood stopped all 22 shots he faced for his second-straight shutout as the Red Wings took a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final with a 3-0 victory. Brad Stuart, Tomas Holmstrom and Valtteri Filppula scored for Detroit.
The Red Wings raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first period behind goals from Stuart and Holmstrom. After taking a nice delayed pass from Filppula, Stuart wound up and blasted a shot past a screened Marc-Andre Fleury to stake Detroit to a 1-0 lead 6:55 into the game. Holmstrom made it 2-0 nearly five minutes later when he finished off a shot from Henrik Zetterberg that trickled between Fleury's pads.
The opening 20 minutes was a defensive clinic by the Red Wings, as the Penguins didn't record their first shot on goal until 12 minutes into the game and were held to no shots on goal at even strength.
The two clubs were scoreless in the second period as the Red Wings took a 23-12 shot advantage into the third period.
Filppula put the game out of reach during 4-on-4 play on a fantastic, diving individual effort to beat defenseman Kris Letang and Fleury to give Detroit a 3-0 lead.
Frustration began to set in for the Penguins -- especially so for forward Ryan Malone, who had his nose broken in Game 1 on a hit from Niklas Kronwall -- as the club was called for 11 minute penalties in the third period.
The cheap tactics didn't take long to surface, as Gary Roberts suckerpuched Johan Frazen in the head. Franzen was making his first appearance since Game 1 of the West Final due to concussion-like symptoms. That wasn't the only transgression against Franzen and his head, as defenseman Ryan Whitney was called for roughing for a behind-the-play blow to the side of the Swede's head.
Things hit a fevered pitch with 1:08 left in the game as Charmin-soft forward Petr Sykora put a shoulder into Chris Osgood, which knocked the goaltender into his net and drew a crowd as tempers flared -- resulting in Pavel Datsyuk throwing punches on Gary Roberts. Roberts and fellow forward Maxim Talbot were given misconducts.
Game 3 is Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.
