Turnovers haunt Wings in Game 3 loss

Adam Hall's goal 7:18 into the third period proved to be the eventual game-winner as the Penguins held off a furious Red Wings rally in the final frame to secure a 3-2 victory Wednesday night in Game 3. Detroit leads the series 2-games-to-1. The Red Wings put heavy pressure on in the third period -- outshooting Pittsburgh 16-5 -- but were unable to get the equalizer.

The Red Wings came out with a strong start to the game with a 9-1 shot advantage. Pittsburgh's lone shot was a fantastic chance for Ryan Malone that was turned aside by goaltende Chris Osgood. The Penguins, however, came back with a surge late in the period. The first goal was caused by an unforced error by defenseman Brad Stuart, who's bad outlet pass to Henrik Zetterberg deflected off the forward's skate and back to Pittsburgh, where Crosby hopped on a rebound that found a hole through Osgood's pads.

The Penguins built off the momentum into the second period and took a 2-0 lead with the club's first power-play goal of the series when Crosby slammed home a loose puck at the side of the Detroit crease just 2:34 into the period.

Johan Franzen, playing his second game since returning from injury, cut the lead to 2-1 following a fantastic individual effort in the waning seconds of a Detroit power play late in the period. Franzen corraled a loose puck at the top of the zone and took advantage of the space he was given by skating down and deking his way through the Pittsburgh defense before going backhand-to-forehand in tight to find a space between the short-side post.

Pittsburgh dodged a huge bullet late in the period when Nicklas Lidstrom was high-sticked by Jordan Staal. The infraction drew blood -- and automatic double-minor -- but it was missed by the referees.

Detroit ramped up the pessure in the third period but were victimized by another turnover as a result of a strong Pittsburgh forecheck by Gary Roberts. Following a save that took Osgood out of the crease and to the side of the net, the puck bounced to Hall behind the net before he deflected the puck off Osgood's backside and into the net as the goaltender scrambled back to between the pipes. The goal restored a huge two-goal advantage for Pittsburgh at the 7:18 mark.

The Red Wings continued their push and cut the lead to 3-2 following a quick wristshot from the right faceoff circle from Mikael Samuelsson that found its way past a screened Marc-Andre Fleury.

Detroit was unable to get another past Fleury for the remainder of the game, despite glorious scoring chances from Valtteri Filppula and Franzen, who was fantastic with six shots on goal.

The Red Wings outshot the Penguins 34-24 in the game. Fleury finished with 32 saves while Osgood turned away 21 for Detroit.
