For the fourth time in 11 seasons that Stanley Cup has returned to Hockeytown! Henrik Zetterberg's goal in the third period helped Detroit hold on for a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Wednesday's Game 6. Chris Osgood stopped 20 of 22 shots and Brian Rafalski and Valtteri Filppula also scored for the Red Wings, which won all four of their playoff series this season on the road.
The Red Wings got off to the start they wanted Wednesday with a power-play goal off the stick of Rafalski, who took a nice pass from Zetterberg to find a hole past Marc-Andre Fleury to give Detroit a 1-0 lead 5:0 into the game.
Detroit built up a 2-0 lead in the second period when Filppula capitalized on a rebound to beat Fleury for his fifth goal of the playoffs. Pittsburgh was able to cut the lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal from Evgeni Malkin with 4:34 remaining in the period when his shot from the left faceoff circle beat Chris Osgood between the pads.
The Red Wings put the clamps down in the third period as the Penguins began to gamble and got the eventual game-winning goal as Detroit capitalized on their defensive pressure. Zetterberg skated up the left side of the ice and snapped a quick shot that handcuffed Fleury, who never completely stopped the puck. The puck hit the ice behind Fleury and as he tried to cover the puck it slid into the back of the net to give Detroit a 3-1 lead.
The Penguins' never-say-die attitude helped get the game close in the final two minutes when Marian Hossa deflected a Sergei Gonchar point shot on a late power-play to cut the lead to 3-2. The Penguins nearly tied the game with just seconds remaining but Osgood made the save...
... and the celebration began.
The Red Wings outshot Pittsburgh 30-22 for the game and finished 1-for-3 on the power play. The Penguins finished 2for-5 with the extra man and got 27 saves from Fleury.
