Toronto's FAN590 and TSN report that the Red Wings have re-signed defenseman Brad Stuart to a four-year contract worth an average of $3.75-million per season. Detroit acquired Stuart at the NHL trade deadline last season and was an instant fit on the Red Wings' No. 2 pairing with Niklas Kronwall. Reports leading up to today's signing indicated that Stuart may ultimately test the free agent market.
According to TSN, the contract includes a limited no-trade clause over the last two years of the contract.
The signing shores up the Red Wings' top four for at least the next two seasons. Stuart, Niklas Kronwall and Brian Rafalski are all under contract for the next for seasons. The Wings still have two of their own defensemen to get under contract in the forum of Chris Chelios (unrestricted) and Kyle Quincey (restricted). With both of those players eventually under contract the Red Wings will be carrying 10 "NHL-ready" defensemen on the roster.
