Downey on Waivers

Forward Aaron Downey was placed on waivers for the second time this season on Thursday morning. If Downey passes unclaimed by noon Friday he can be re-assigned to Grand Rapids or kept with the club. The Red Wings last placed Downey on waivers 30 days ago and he cleared unclaimed. Downey can remain with the team even if he clears -- as he did previously -- and can be freely shuttled to and from Grand Rapids as long as he doesn't not spend more than 30 days (or 10 NHL games, whichever comes first) with the Red Wings.

If that happens, Downey will be required to clear waivers once again.

The roster move, as the Macomb Daily's Bruce MacLeod points out, grants the Red Wings some roster flexibility if the club would need to make a quick personnel move.

The Red Wings are currently at the roster limit of 23 players and no player on the roster is eligible to be sent down to Grand Rapids if the need arose without having to clear waivers first.
