If losing to the St. Louis Blues wasn't enough, the Red Wings' team plane slid off the runway prior to takeoff Tuesday night and got stuck in the mud in the process.
No one was hurt in the mishap and everyone was evacuated from the plane without incident. The Red Wings' next scheduled game is not until Saturday at home against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Aerial photos of the plane taken by the KSDK newschopper appear to show that the pilot took a wide turn too short, causng the plane's right landing gear to roll into the median. Heavy rains earlier in the week, coupled with attempts to dislodge the wheel by the pilot by using engine power, resulted in the landing gear sinking deeper into the mud -- to the point where the right wing was sitting just a foot above the ground.
As reported by WJBK in Detroit, Red Wings team officials stated the plane was moving at approximately 5 miles/hour when the wheel slid off the runway and that everyone disembarked the plane in a normal matter. The team returned to their hotel in St. Louis for the night.
