Shanny has an Agenda...

Why Bother?

Sun, Feb 4, 2:15 AM Pacific

Nobody has yet told you the truth about why Battling Brendan was not fined by NHL HQ for those remarks concerning the officiating Wednesday night.

There is only one reason, people. And that is fear.

Make no mistake. Shanny's efforts during the lockout have positioned him within the loftiest circles of the circuit and give him significant sway on the labor front as well.

His migration to Broadway is motivated by more than mere desire to include the Rangers on the back of his trading card before retirement and election to The Hall of Stuff. As I understand, Ken Holland trumped Glen Sather's offer as the Red Wings attempted to prevent the Irishman's defection via unrestricted free agency. Yet Brendan still came to Manhattan. Well, he did so to establish his own footprint as proximal to Sixth Avenue as is possible while still threading twine with rubber.

Take it from me. He has an agenda. And it doesn't stop when he hangs up the skates. That's all I'm gonna say at this time. Just don't sit there stupid(ly) and believe the crap you've been fed by other pundits claiming he escaped financial discipline out of pity or some newfound tolerance for vocal dissention by those hired by the executive arm of The Board of Governors. That was for show.

'Tis more a case of not wanting to piss off someone who shall someday be your boss.

Oh well, big deal. The whole idea of Free Agency is to allow players to play where they want. Also we live in North America, people have the freedoms to better themselves.

What else did Shanny have to prove here? He did it all. It didn't bother me he went to the Rangers.

I don't know about that, but he is correct in that this isn't exactly new news. People were speculating that before Shanny even finalized his decision.

[bleh]

I didn't suspect that in the offseason. You must have exceptional foresight if you saw that coming.

There may well be some truth to that theory, but that's just a guy with a blog - and from the looks of it, far too much time on his hands - pulling theories out of his ass to fill space.

He's not a 'guy with a blog', I think he is actually signing a contract in the Rangers organ-eye-zation. :P

But I guess I can agree with you. He obviously took a political role in the collective bargaining, but the point is that he gets a certain amount of lee-way after gaining a little respect.

And he isn't fined because there's definitely a seat in the NHL brass with his name on it.

As people have said, it is kind of old news. Plus. NY is closer to Boston, which is supposedly where his wife's family is from.

I think they actually live there full time.

That Shanahan wouldn't be called for obvious penalties because he would one day be their boss? His non-calls have been an ongoing problem for guys going against the Rangers.

 Can you show me in the excerpt where he claims Shanny doesn't have penalties called on him because he would one day be their boss?

He asserts that's why Shanahan wasn't fined for criticizing the refs in the press. He doesn't say anything about non-calls for that reason.

And obviously I was referring to the part about Shanny going to New York to better position himself for a potential career with NHL higher-ups. The writer makes it sound like he's sitting on some big secret that he can't reveal now about Shanahan's future. Everyone already talked about that angle when Shanny decided on the Rangers. It's not exactly a secret.

Oh, well I never heard any mention of it, so I guess this thread is for those of us in the dark.

And anyway, he's not saying that (Shh!) Shanny may have a future with the NHL, he's saying 'Why Bother' treating him like an NHL player.

I think Shannny should have stayed a Wing (I think everyone does). But he`s doing well so........ good luck Shanny.

sidenote: I wonder how he feels playing with Avery ???

That's not really the point. I think he did the right thing for himself.

I, for one, support you Earth.

Now's not the time, Goldie, I think I'm making an ass of myself.

To summarize this thread, then it can sink to the bottom of the forum: Shanny gets special consideration from NHL HQ because he's on his way there. The article never claimed that it was a big secret that Shanny would be a higher-up. Just that he is going to join a corrupt system.

Although players shouldn't be fined for criticizing in the first place. This isn't Socialist Russia.

Ideally, but control freaks who'd put a metal clamp over some people's mouths if they had the power will always exist, everywhere. Sadly, that isn't just people involved in corporations and businesses, but I agree.

It's like the a quote from the article that Loo posted in the "Shanahan rips refs" article on page four. "We don't muzzle our players," NHL vice president Colin Campbell said, when asked if Shanahan would be fined over his remarks that NHL referees don't give Ranger teammate Jaromir Jagr a fair shake. "We're not happy that Brendan Shanahan chose to be critical of our officials but he is, within limits, free to say what he wants.

Like, yeah, bulls***. "We're the NHL, we don't muzzle our players, and we respect an open forum--look how upstanding we are--but oh yeah, uh, we don't like it when they do talk. Oops. That is in no way a contradiction though, talk to our legal guys."

People who can't handle and try to kill critique just stink of fear, end of story.

The guy who wrote the article is a bonehead. And late.

So Shanahan moved to the Rangers so he could be closer to the NHL offices and maybe a job there when he's done playing?

THAT'S news?

Who the hell cares?

After the work he did during the lockout etc, good for Brendan.

Not the point of the article, that's not the news...

forget it.

 yeah, those commies <_<:P

It is actually stupid how the players can`t talk about the reffing because 75% of the time the player is right over a certain issue.

It only bothered me to the extent that we needed him.

And to the extent that we were not able to replace him.

I know I am going off-topic with this one.

I wonder why sentiment was not quite the same in Fedorov's case?
