I think of something Groucho Marx said once..."He loved life and lived it joyously and deeply, and that's as good an epitaph as anyone can have." Rest in peace, Shawn, and when you get to where you're going, would you say hi to Brad McCrimmon, Ruslan Salei and Stefan Liv for us?

Ok, here's his Wikipedia page summarized down to the reasons he is up there and Shanny won't be. Bolded areas are of particular distinction. So besides the 3 Lady Byngs and being basically the second greatest non-goaltending Red Wing (behind his linemate Gordie Freakin' Howe) until Yzerman and Lidstrom finished their careers he has no other reason to be up there.

Anytime that there is even a debate whether someone's number should be retired I feel like they shouldn't be up.

It's the offseason. I'll like him again in September. For now, he gets the summer off from being liked. He's on vacation and shouldn't have to worry about whether or not some middle-aged unbotoxed wretch in North Dakota approves.

Per Helena St. James twitter, the deal has an annual cap hit of $732,500. Yet another smart deal by Holland. Atta boy Kenny!

All I ever had to know about Mr. Burr: when he first joined the Club, Sergei Fedorov roomed with Shawn, who told him the best way to learn how to speak English was to watch cartoons on television.

Sad...very sad. Shawn was one of three Red Wings who I wished were still around for the 1997 Cup win...Him, Bob Probert and Dino Ciccarelli. Two of those guys have left this world now. Both FAR too soon! RIP Shawn Burr. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOVJF5SYO4c http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEN6_QOkVTw Shawn had Leukemia, Acute Leukemia more specifically. He had a bone marrow donor match ready and was awaiting the procedure. Acute Leukemia is no joke, back in 1994, my Aunt was diagnosed with it and was admitted to the hospital on April 1st, she was dead on April 30th. She was 30 years old. Below is a video talking about his battle with the disease and the efforts he made to our community to bring awareness to us and to ask us to become donors. It's as easy as getting a swab at the dentist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrcODuZMCUo again, RIP Shawn, you were a helluva guy!

OK I have to throw this question out there: Am I the only one here who actually prefers the look of the WC Alumni jersey over the WC jersey itself?

Met the guy a few times, he was a really down to Earth and a personable guy. Sad sad news.

It's always too soon when someone passes but this is far far too early. Best wishes to his family and those in the Red Wings player/fan orbit who knew him. I'll always try and remember him for scoring a goal with his head, almost soccer-like vs mighty Edmonton in 1988. Here's one of Shawn crushing Jeremy Roenick if anyone asks why he should get cuts in line to get into Heaven.

I was thinking get all three and go with two friends. If said friends are female and very hot, it would be even better as a "grind line".

The same Colorado Avalanche that retired Ray Bourque's number based on the 2 seasons he played there? I think that disqualifies the use of the word strict in reference to their jersey retirement requirements. And on the topic of Shanny, I hold the same opinion that others here have already stated. He won't get his number retired & do think that the Wings need a ring of honor. That would allow for the organization to still honor players that did make a significant contribution but fall short of being the type of not just great but generational player/leader that the Wings will put in the rafters.

So the consensus on Shanny's #14 is a no?

HHOF does not equal JLA rafters. Reserved strictly for DRW legends. I honestly think after Nick, we will not see another number up there for a very long time.

I think if we're going to speculate, the best theory is that he left because he didn't get along with Babcock. Same as Scheider and Lang. Although I think in the case of all three of theses guys, the Wings weren't overly worried about them leaving either.

We wouldn't have to lower our standards very far to include Shanny, but we would have to lower them, so let's not do that. The more discussions I have like this, the more I wish we did have that "ring of honour". No one will ever see the number 14 on a Red Wing and think, "ah, Meech".

Shanny is the perfect example of why the Wings need a "Ring of Honor" in the new arena. Gives the Wings a way to honor guys like Shanny, Homer, etc, who certainly deserve great recognition, but don't quite meet the standard set by Stevie and Nick.

Actually, there was a pretty good twitter exchange from Modano and the Wings about it...

IMO that is way too much to give up for just a decent Dman.
