He is old school and travels by Viking longship. He's probably got another 4-5 weeks at least until he is safe in port.

Agreed. I think we can also point to other coaches who have excelled when taking over a team, and then fast forward a few years later and they are fired. I think its safe to say that a coaches message gets lost and new blood is needed to keep things going. Very very few coaches in the NHL stay at the same place for a long time. Heck the longest tenured head coach in the NHL is Quenneville and he has been on the job 9 years. After that you have Tippett with the Coyotes since 2009, and then in 3rd place is Cooper who has only been on the job since 2013. Sullivan needs a larger sample size, but longevity in the NHL coaching realm revolves around getting the most out of your players. So far, Sullivan has achieved that.

Yes. I also realize that "Bylsma tho" doesn't necessarily have any bearing on Sullivan's abilities or the success Sullivan had last season or the success Sullivan will/won't have over the next five years. I don't disagree that what really matters is having great players, that great players can, potentially, make any coach look great. Still, I'm starting to think Mike Sullivan might be the best coach in the NHL. He burned Mike Johnston's offense-killing system to the ground and the team hasn't looked back since then. Will he ultimately crash and burn? Maybe. (Probably.) But, at this time, there isn't much to criticize, beyond pointing to Bylsma.

Lefty, he has 2 years left. Unless his contract is blocking us from re-signing someone, or signing a stud I'd rather just let him play the contract out. If we buy him out that is 4 more years of a cap hit.

    #9 Pick Selections 2007-2016

Ejdsell is a 21 year old who hasn't cracked SEL yet. The chances of him being a top center are low, and beyond that Chicago and Nashville both want him as well, so it's not even a done deal. Also top centers are a lot harder to find down the draft, boom/bust defense prospects aren't nearly as hard to find.

    2017 Draft

The problem with "big guys" who are big at 17 or 18, most of them aren't big hitters because they don't need to be. They just out muscle everyone in juniors. Then you take a kid who's 6'0" or so, and he actually hits people. Once he gets to be 195 or 200 lbs, he becomes a wrecking ball. Borowiecki 6'1" Martin 6'3" Schenn 6'2" Gudas 6'0" Foligno 6-3 Larsson 6-3 Dubinsky 6-2 Ritchie 6-2 Emelin 6-2 Reaves 6-1 Wilson 6-4 Those are the top 11 hitters in the NHL this season. Mix between Europeans and North Americans, and other than Wilson the same height or shorter than guys people have argued are too small. It has nothing to do with height, it has everything to do with attitude.

I mean, "Who do you see on D with higher upside than Larkin and Athanasiou?" is sort of an unfair question for that reason. Granted, I realize you were asking that question in response to the claim that we need centermen more than we need defensemen. Personally, I've been extremely impressed by Hronek and Saarijarvi. Red Wings prospect Filip Hronek named Saginaw Spirit MVP Vili Saarijarvi Nominated For OHL Defenceman Of The Year Excellent skaters, high-end skill sets. They know how to move the puck, make plays, generate offense, create goals. If a defenseman comes along and singlehandedly saves the Red Wings' blue line, he'll be a player in this mold. Jordan Sambrook has had a good year. Red Wings' defensive prospects set to faceoff in OHL Finals Hicketts put up 7 goals and 34 points for the Griffins this season, which is pretty good for an undersized AHL rookie defenseman. Cholowski...not sold on him, but The Powers That Be clearly believe in his potential, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. Overall, I like what we have in the D pipeline. No sure things, but we do have a couple players worth getting excited about. In terms of centermen...dunno that we have anyone in the pipeline who looks like a potential Zetterberg replacement. Ehn and Holmstrom and Turgeon are probably bottom-sixers, if that. Larkin's good, but I think the jury is still out on his career potential. AA, to me, is indeed looking like a winger. I dunno. We need both centermen and defensemen. And we don't not need wingers and goalies. Take the best player available with the first-round pick and maybe the second-round pick. If we're going to draft for perceived need, we should do it with the later picks.

I agree with you guys that said there's a problem with just limiting it to the specific draft number without the context of each draft and I don't think it really shows what level of player to expect, but - for curiosity's sake - if we do Dickie's perspective thing, the list of 9th picks 2000-14 is: Nikolai Ehlers, Horvat, Trouba, Hamilton, Granlund, Jared Cowen, Josh Bailey, Couture, James Sheppard, Brian Lee, Ladislav Smid, Phaneuf, Petr Taticek, Toumo Ruutu, Brent Krahn Edit: And I thought could be interesting to compare the #9 list to Dickie's #7 list to see just how much of a difference order does make when it's a small difference and not that near the top. The original list: Haydn Fleury, Nurse, Dumba, Mark Schiefele, Skinner, Kadri, Colin Wilson, Voracek, Okposo, Jack Skille, Rostislav Olesz, Suter, Lupul, Komisarek, Lars Jonsson. There are more busts in the #9 list. Plenty of players that would help us immensely in both lists.
