*singsongingitalong* Today's my birthday! Yes, it's my birthday! I'm going to the game! I'm taking my son. It's my son's first game. He's only three! I'm hoping we lose! Isn't that terrible! He's going to be sooo confused! Section 126 Row 24 if anyone wants to buy me a birthday beer (...or give me a punch to the gut for all my smartassedness around this joint over the years!) LGRW!

The 2002 team would beat the 2008 team imo. Better goaltending, better version of Lidstrom and Chelios, better coach, and a lot more skill at the forward position. Maybe those Hall of Fame forwards weren't in their primes, but look at the number of them. Guys like Hull and Robitaille were still 30 goal scorers. Three Hall of Famers on the top line. Larionov was still a capable scorer. Finally, the grind line was younger and could contribute more offensively. If that team didn't coast throughout the season, they could have broken some records. The 2013 Blackhawks shouldn't be on the list. They barely beat our sorry ass team that year in the playoffs. The 2000 Devils, 2001 Avs, and 2002 Red Wings would destroy that team. Many other teams would as well. ESPN should just stick to talking about how big Lebron James' penis is, because that's all they know how to discuss all day. Incidentally, they had a lot of basketball teams on there but didn't mention the 2001 Lakers, who went 15-1 in the postseason.

They would put up some numbers but would have to struggle every shift. A peak Lidstrom would likely play against them on every shift. Bowman could even juggle lines and put Fedorov against them who was a great two-way forward. That's just one line too. I don't see the other lines for the 2008 team having as much success as the depth of the 2002 team. Franzen may be the only ex-factor here, but 2002 Chelios would make him his *****.

Fedorov in 2002 was still really good. They wouldn't skate circles around him. Most likely, that line would be matched up against the Grind Line. Draper would neutralize Datsyuk. Maltby would put a gloved hand in Zetterberg's mouth after every shift to get him off his game.

This. I used to hunt for a good stream an hour before game time every game night, but now i'll just check NHL.come for the box score. Playoffs, in the contending years, were always games i'd look forward to for days. No excitement like that right now. Things will get better, this was inevitable with a salary capped league. We all saw it coming. One thing I do take some comfort in though, is knowing how many years past the introduction of the cap this team contended for, even making the WCF in '07, winning the Cup in '08, and coming within one game of repeating in '09. Missed the playoffs for the first time in 2016-17. That's a hell of a lot more success and longetivity than most "experts" and "insiders" thought the Wings would ever have. Pretty sure many thought they'd be a league doormat within a few seasons of the cap coming in.

As much as it will hurt the draft gotta have the win on the bday. The boy has to experience screaming "just a city boy born and raised in South Detroit" Oh wait he is 3 he will just remember that his dad took him to a game which is the coolest part. So you may root for defeat as the experience is what matters! Remember took my daughter to her first game about same age and it was here in Atlanta. She proudly wore her Wings jersey and actually made on the big screen. Buuuut smiles turned to tears when the Thrashers crowd booed her lol. Took a lot of candy that night to calm her down. Happy Happy Birthday

I forgot to mention the number one reason the 2002 team would win. Brett Lebda.

I'm not going to read the list because it's ESPN and after their " 20 most dominant athletes " debacle of a list the other day I can't be bothered but to say the 2008 Wings were a better hockey team than the 2002 squad is insane. Our D was not as good in 2002 but who cares, no one could get the puck from us and we had Lidstrom in his prime. The puck possession on that 2002 team was out of this world. Up front there wasn't a weakness anywhere and we had one of the best checking lines ever assembled. The PP had two of the best right handed PP snipers ever with Hull and Shanny. It would be stretching to find a weakness on the 2002 team. The 2008 team was also obviously a very good team with Z and Pavel in their primes and our top 4 on D was amazing. I'm not taking anything away from them and if we had won the cup in 2009 also my view might be a bit different but I would take 2002 over 2008 all day.

Yep. I can remember "experts" (The Hockey News among others) predicting that "this will be the year the streak ends" years before it actually happened.

Thanks. I forgot about the CHL agreement with him. Unless he pulls a Larkin and performs too well at camp next year to send him down, he will probably spend a handful of games on the roster and be sent down before he hits his ten game mark. Its entirely possible he starts the following season in GR before being called up permanently. I am actually OK with this. I would rather a future top 6 forward get top line minutes in the AHL then get 4th line duty in the NHL as he develops. That's what i would have done differently with Jurco. Just my opinion tho. A bottom 6 forward would be different. Bringing up guys like Bertuzzi, Turgeon, and Frk and giving them bottom 6 minutes in the NHL allows them to be sheltered but learn their roles at the NHL level at the same time. Just how I would do it. As for keeping prospects down too long, I don't think it hurts the player as much as it does the team who is wasting contractual years on a guy by keeping him in the minors. Its certainly better than bringing up a guy too soon. I would rather a guy be "overripe" than too "green". I think the latter is more damaging to a players development. And as much as people hate the whole "overripe" thing, the only guy I can think of that was kept down longer than he should have been IMO is Nyquist. Larkin and Mantha weren't overripe when they were brought up. Signing Vanek may not be the right thing to do, but it wouldn't be blocking Svech. This is a false argument that has been overused over the years (not saying you) that UFA signings keep NHL ready kids in GR. But signing guys like Green, Daley, Nielsen, etc did not keep guys like Mantha or Larkin buried in the minors. If a guy isn't ready for full time NHL duty, he isn't ready. Bringing in veterans doesn't change that. Besides, kids make far less salary than veterans do. Why would a team with cap problems bring in more expensive UFAs to fill their roster if they have cheaper, younger alternatives available who are ready to go? That never made sense to me. I don't necessarily disagree with your premise, but its Holland so.... As for Lil' Svech, if the Wings get him, than I can see him making the roster out of camp. That might even give them the incentive to keep his big brother on the roster, but that's the only way I see it happening.

$12M for Tavares....I don't think I'm allowed to say where I think "this should probably be".

    Drafted First rounders

I can still see the Avs winning a cup. Having Sakic-Lindros down the middle would have been scary.

He can take his love child Howard with him too. No compensation, part of the severance package.
