    THN Player Poll

If Rod Brind'Amour isn't a shut-down guy - then how did he manage winning the Selke Trophy in both 2006, & 2007? Lehtinen won the same trophy in '98, '99, & 2003. Ditto for Peca in '97, & 2002. These guys aren't defensive specialists - then I don't know who is? Draper has been a 3rd liner (has seen some time on the top line a few seasons ago) for several years, maybe more...No doubt he was a 4th liner when he 1st joined the Wings.

    THN Player Poll

The way I see it - defensive specialists generally play either on the 2nd, or 3rd forward lines - they play a fair # of minutes shutting down other teams top lines, & play alot on the pk...Guys like Draper, Peca, Brind 'Amour, Lehtinen, & Guy Carbonneau are/were def 2nd, or 3rd liners...4th liners are def character/high energy types whom see limited ice time.

Concerning Lindros - didn't Stevie Y say some favorable things about him? They were teammates on Canadian Olympic/World Cup teams; maybe there's something left in the tank for Lindros, but I kinda doubt it.

    Mike Ricci decides to retire

1 of the best comments concerning Ricci was made by Modano - calling him a "hair farmer"

    A case for Nicklas Lidstrom

Has Jagr ever been on any "bad" teams? Okay - those Caps teams were nothing to write home about, but in comparison I feel Feds has been on some pretty sorry teams these last 3 years...IMHO if ya don't have a decent supporting cast it'll be challenging to put up the big #'s; and Jagr these past few years has been pretty healthy while the same cannot be said for Sergei.

    Need your guys help

Ticketmaster is always a sure bet, but I've found good deals (paid $65 for $76 seats last year) on Stubhub...Then there's always the adventure, & excitement of buying your tickets from some "guy" (scalper) on the street 3 blocks away from the Joe

Osgood Wants To Play Five More Years

Dunno if this is a good thing, or a bad thing, but @ the current rate of netminder development in GR - Ozzie may be our starter for the 2008/2009 season Well it's reassuring to say the least that he's busting his rear to keep himself in top notch shape throughout the offseason

    NHL Tournament of Logos

That Leaf logo is rather so - so IMHO...Their "old-school" is so much better.

    A case for Nicklas Lidstrom

Damn straight! For a while there (nearly 2 full seasons) Jagr had foot/skate issues that would make Forsberg proud; IMHO Jagr may have had a few more spectacular years concerning offensive output, but where Feds shined was his consistency, & his defensive awareness which made him considerably more valuable. In all honesty I will be 1 happy Red Wing fan if Feds were to return to Detroit (as a member of the club, & not a visitor) this spring of 2008

    Center Ice

Good question. #1 - What cable co. is in your area? Chances are they will offer Center Ice - however both Direct TV, & DISH Network are nation wide so there won't be an issue concerning it's availability. #2 - Pricing; both satellite co. offer similar packages (basic/mid level/premium) for a similar price (give or take $3 to $5 per month)...Now IMO the rates for most cable networks seem to be a bit higher - or so that is what I've found. #3 - Service; local cable has it's advantages - no issues with rain/snow hampering the picture, & somebody nearby is available...Then again in the past year I can honestly say only 2, or 3 times has my DISH Network set-up lost the signal due to heavy rain (late @ night with no game on btw), & in my case the nice folks whom provided my set-up are only 10 minutes away, & are available for any service/repairs - so the whole "nobody is around to help you with your satellite issues" is total B.S... To add to that the Charter Cable offered here is horrible (picture/sound/service) not to mention Charter Cable discontinued VERSUS 2 days before the playoffs began #4 - Odds/Ends; Cable networks offer 1 feed (either home team feed, or the away team feed - the choice isn't yours)...With the DISH Network Center Ice package I get both home/away feeds, & sometimes a 3rd feed as well (usually TSN, or Rogers Sportsnet outta Canada); I assume Direct TV is the same, but am not 100% sure on that. #5 - Sports packages; no NHL games will be televised on these "FOX Sports" packages (at least not that I'm aware of). The satellite providers want the extra $$$ so they'll black out the games - forcing you to buy Center Ice; cut to the chase, & forget the packages, & just get Center Ice...With FS Detroit you can watch the post-game shows - that's about it ...Then again there's uber-sexy-hot-chick-jock Angie Mentink on FSN Detroit #6 - HD feeds; ??? as I've stated earlier it's a toss-up as to the # of games that will be broadcast on Center Ice since they're the "middle-man"...Best to call, or check out the respective web sites for further info on any HD broadcasts. Overall I'm very happy with my DISH Network; more value vs cable, & I love the fact that I can choose which feed I want; only risk is the weather, but so far I haven't had any problems during Red Wing games *FINGERS CROSSED* Any further questions just PM me

Another UFA name that I recognized is Nolan Pratt. From what I recall he's more or less a stay @ home Dman with solid physical capabilities, but offers little to no offense. Anyone care to shed some light/offer any more info?

Quite true...You can add current Red Wings Dman Rafalski to that list (signed by NJ as a free agent), along with ex-Red Wings Dino Ciccerelli, & Luc Robitaille.

I see what you, & GoWings1905 are saying - it's just that Cleary was looked @ with high regard, & expectations were high...He never quite lived up to them primarily because he lacked a solid work ethic, & now he's back on track to having a decent pro career. Not to sound repetitive, but to me the "diamond in the ruff" exemplifies a guy whom was picked in the 3rd, or later rounds, & was looked @ as a long shot in making it to the NHL level...Guys like Dats (6th round), Homer (10th round), & Hank (7th round) to me are prime examples; none were looked @ as sure fire NHL'ers, & are stars today.

    THN Player Poll

For the Wings in particular Draper has spent much of his time as the 3rd line center (which I'm sure he'll continue to play); I personally think Filppula has the skill for a spot on the 2nd line for the 2007/2008 season, but that's just me...As for Hoodlum; well if Babcock gave him some reg ice time - who knows how many points he'd get?... If Filppula does center the 3rd line - I'm sure he'd do well since he appears to be another Hank/Dats clone in the making (loads of offensive ability yet having the defensive smarts) With many Euros playing the game today (especially on the Red Wings) they may have a different opinion on the needs for/against a physical agitator/tuff guy when compared to their N.American counterparts...As of yet I'm thinking the majority of GMs/coaches feel that having that presence in the locker room, & on ice holds greater importance than having another skill type playing on the 4th line. I remember watching the clip of Probie duking it out with that little cement head Domi (round 2 - aka Probie's revenge)...Just after Probert gets done pummeling Domi - the camera pans over to the Detroit bench; I've never seen Stevie so animated (that is unless he'd just won the Cup). Stevie was standing, & mimicking Domi with the "I've just gotten the heavyweight belt back, & now I'm wearing it" gesture as Domi skated by - on his way to the pen box...The Joe was nutz, & every Red Wing player was going crazy too

Hard work did earn Cleary a roster spot...To me a "diamond in the rough" is a guy drafted in later rounds, & turns out being a solid NHL'er.

    THN Player Poll

On many teams the 3rd line centers are the face-off/defensive minded specialist Maybe placing some names/faces with that 4th line may make it easier for some folks whom are torn between the tuff guy, or skill guy for the 4th line...How about (going back in time here) Kocur, or Hudler for the 4th line?
  21. F.Michael

    Camp tryout offers...

Cleary was by no means a "diamond in the rough" when he was a 1st round pick (13th overall) back 1997 - many high expectations back then in Chicago, & then in Edmonton, & then in Phoenix...Wasn't until he hit a new low, & was given a try out in Detroit until he got his career back on track...Maybe there's a few guys out there that can pull a "Cleary"?

To be honest the prices are average (basing it off of games I've attended in Chicago, St.Louis, Phoenix, & Toronto) for reg season games, but what Ilitch did these past playoffs was a joke!

    Andy Sutton to the Islanders

Bit off topic, but on You Tube there's a fight involving Sutton...Color guy Ray Ferraro commented how Sutton fighting a smaller guy "shows his character - or a lack there of". EDIT - fight added...It was against Brewer; not such a small guy - my memory fails me again
