  1. The only reason is jealousy. All of the other excuses, and trust me I have heard many, are just that.

Just put yourself in the shoes of a die hard St. Louis Blues (Never won a Cup despite 19 straight playoff appearances) or Chicago Blackhawks (Have not won in 49 years) fan and you will see what I mean. Success breeds jealousy.

  2. I'm not denying that you have our number, all I am saying is beat Phoenix tonight, then talk trash. You seem to have already put Detroit in the WCF (based on your previous comment), and I think you need to take care of business tonight before you say things like that.

I am actually rooting for you guys to win, because if we get by Vancouver and you advance in the next round, I would love to play you again. I think it would be an epic series and nothing would be sweeter than finally beating you guys to make it to the SCF.

I took his statement to mean "if we get to the WCF, then I would rather play Chicago than Vancouver". I am with him on that as I do not want them to have to go all the way back out west again.

I may get clubbed over the head for saying this, but the Blackhawks are my second choice if the Redwings can't win it all. I mean 49 years!! Not even we Wings fans know what that is like as we "only" had to wait 42 years to win another Cup. lol

With that said, Chicago is a great sports town, like Detroit, and therefore deserves better. If anything, it would certainly be better than having to watch yet another s***tsburgh championship or some team like Anaheim a few years back where no one cares about hockey win it all.

  3. May be a little late, but the suckiness that the Penguins and Blackhawks enjoyed for so long were not by design!! One team was going bankrupt while the other had an owner who could care less about winning.

This is not the NBA where you draft one or two good players and become contenders over night. This is a team sport. Speaking of which didn't the Bulls do something like this after they won their final championship in 1998? The old guard left town and they have never been the same since.

In the end, going that route requires a good bit of luck in pulling out of the vicious cycle that is losing. I understand the sentiment of this post as I have felt the same after frustrating Redwings losses.

This year reminds me a lot of 1999.

  4. will the wings be in the center ice ads? nO! not that it matters but think of how annoying every ad of the penguins was and multiply it by 1000

Look at it this way, it aint going to help the Pets.

I say let them have the spot light and watch how every other team sets out to beat the crap out of them like never before!!

Meanwhile, the Redwings will continue to win under the radar and the Pets will falter and never be able to live up to their mountainous expectations, like the Yankees or Cowboys!!

  5. Wait, am I reading this right? You would rather lose in the 2nd round? Then lose in the finals? That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard. I am just down right confused right now...

You don't want the chance cause it hurts? Do you want everything in life to be easy? To choose permanent losing over a chance at winning.

It just goes to show how spoiled Redwings fans have become!!

The Maple Leafs have not even been there since 1967!! I am sure they would kill just to be able to see their team even get back to the finals, much less win it all.

  6. The Redwings finally beat the Ducks and made it all the way to the finals despite their injuries, taking the series all the way to 7 games. That speaks volumes of this teams character. They have heart!! We should be proud of that, not wishing they lost in the 2nd round like a bunch of *******!!

  7. I gain no solace from any of these truths. In fact, thats why I hate the Penguins, similar to why I hate the Ducks: when we lost to the Ducks, the Wings were the better team, but we beset with injury and the officiating at a double-standard and goonery allowed to pass killed the series.

Same thing happened with the Penguins this season, and almost last season. We were the better team. Injuries mounted and certain players didn't play to potential. Penguins have their share of villains, though instead of the powerful villains your respect, they are the entitled, corrupt villains you loathe.

The glaring difference between the Ducks and the Penguins is that I respect/slightly fear the Ducks, but the Penguins win based on opportunity and fishy-business from the NHL, who doesn't hide its burning desire for that team to win more than any other.

I have never in my life seen an NFL, NBA, MLB, or NHL team before the Penguins who were marketed as winners the entire season after they lost like the Penguins were last season. Holding Bettman's hand makes the Penguins worse to lose to in my books.

Who would you have rather seen the Pets beat in the finals? The Redwings or the Ducks? To me that would be far worse than this have to deal with two teams we all hate and yet another disappointing post season performance by the Redwings, like 03, 04, and 06.

  8. I personally would have taken the loss to Anaheim in Game 7 to Root for the Ducks to go to the Finals and kick the crap out of Crosby and Malkin. Even if The Pens still won the Cup I would just love to see Pronger end Crosby for a while.

Are you crazy!!!? The Redwings made it to the FINALS!!! That is a big deal in and of itself and something we as fans should be proud of!!

I can't believe for a second you would rather see us lose in the second round to some team of thugs.

Let us put it in perspective, would you be saying that if you were a Toronto Maple Leafs fan whose team has not even been to the finals since 1967?

I hate the Penguins just as much as the next guy, second only to the Ducks of course.

  9. The East is a much easier road to the Cup. Much less travel, far more bottom feeding teams, no real powerhouses - perhaps Pens and Caps getting there now but the lower seeds in the East are usually pretty weak. If the Wings were in the East, we'd be in the ECF every year, SCF alot more. But we're not, gotta deal with the travel and the schedule, just the facts.

I have always hated the Ducks, even before they became contenders.

I hate them now because of their dirty play. I hated before simply b/c of their *** sounding name, Mighty Ducks!! It is even gayer than Penguins, which is pretty ***!! :P

  10. Rangers Fan here just saying congrats Wings you guys are still the champs in my book and are a class organization truly the NHL's best. How many teams would even make the SCF or go to 7 games w/o their best player (datsyuk). As a fan of the NHL i despise the pens probably because they are Bettmans favorite team they got so many calls this series , the 7 men on the ice for 25 secs comes to mind lol . Once my rangers bounced (early as usual) i wanted nothing more than to see Hockey town raise the cup again. I am sure you guys will be back for another go at it next season with a good mix of youths and vets and I hope that if my rangers bounce again (high probability) that Nikky Lids will be hoisting Lord Stanley's Cup and not that punk Crosby. GL next year and enjoy the off-season

Thanks!! I hope your boys sweep the Bettsburgh Pets next year!! I hope the Flyers and Islanders do the same..... I don't know about the Devils..... hate the Devils!! Make it a split between them!! lol

  11. As much as I hate s***tsburgh and Fagpuss Crosby and his boyfriend, the Commish, I still hate the Ducks way more. I really do not hate Colorado anymore, but I hate the Dicks far more than I ever hated the Avs.

I hope to God that the Ducks miss the playoffs next year by becoming the leagues first perfectly imperfect team, 0-82-0 baby!! :P

  12. I think that "protecting the stars" has already taken effect. Thats what the "New NHL" amounts to. It is quite obvious that the Officials were effecting the outcome of games all playoffs, and in the regular season to a lesser degree.

I will go ahead and agree that I hate how the NHL is trying to emulate the NBA, the second least popular of the "Big 4". Why not aim high and look to the NFL for inspiration?

Honestly, how would you rate Phoenix as a hockey city?

Personally, I think they might be okay if the team did not suck so bad. I mean, look at the "hockey hotbed" that is Dallas. Though Dallas seems like a better sports city than Phoenix for some reason, so it is all up in the air.

  13. I think that "protecting the stars" has already taken effect. Thats what the "New NHL" amounts to. It is quite obvious that the Officials were effecting the outcome of games all playoffs, and in the regular season to a lesser degree. Bettman obviously was pulling for the pens, and has a dislike for Detroit. The list goes on and on. I think that its time for the NHL to go Bye-Bye, and then maybe we can look forward to a REAL league. Its the last thing i want to see happen, but the NHL has almost gone beyond the point of no return. I hope that they can get rid of Bettman and pull someone in that really knows what they are doing and does not go with the old Michael Jordan formula, because that is not what hockey fans want to see. I hope that I can stomach the NHL next yeah but with the coyotes leaving in the next couple of years its looking pretty bleak here in the desert.

Why would Bettman dislike Detroit? It would be like Roger Goodell hating the Packers and Bears!!

The Redwings, and a handful of other teams draw viewers which means more $$ for the NHL.

I could see why he would dislike New Jersey and Anaheim, but Detroit? It just seems illogical.

  14. I love Detroit fans!! you guys dont give up lol YOU LOST!! did every team come after you guys this year for wining last year? uuuum nope lol got to love it

It will be even worse for the Penguins b/c they have become Bettman's little darlings.

After the Redwings won last year, the media still sucked up to Cindy as if he won the Cup in 08. Other teams will learn from Detroit and how they shut down Bettman's "Golden Boy". With the Penguins getting all of the attention, teams will really be amped up against the Pens, more than they ever were against the Redwins.

  15. All I have to say is that if you guys thought the over-marketing with Crosby was bad last year, just wait till this year. Bettman, The NHL, and NBC got exactly what they wanted and they will make sure everyone in the US knows about it.

Which means every team that plays the Penguins will step up like never before.

They will have their work cut out for them next year.

  16. Before we get ahead of ourselves, I would think that we would have to worry about our own division first. Particularly with Chicago (or one to two years). Columbus may be a team on the rise. In order for us to make it back, our defense needs a shot in the arm. Maltby should be let go of...we have found replacements. I still don't know why he played in the finals. Our youth should be given more of a chance. I don't know if Osgood can be any better than he has been. Trying to make it to the finals three years in a row will be a hard task. If I remember correctly, Dallas was the last team that had such an opportunity, winning the cup in 1999, losing to New Jersey in 2000 and getting knocked out in the Conference finals (I believe) in 2001. I hate to be a party pooper, but it wouldn't surprise me if neither team makes it back to the finals. I don't care how young Crosby and Malkin are, wear and tear is still wear and tear. Besides, Pittsburgh has the bull's-eye on their backs now! They will find out how hard it is to win. NO ONE will lay down against them. If I were Pittsburgh, I would be very much concerned with Washington. They will be a threat to them for many years to come. I would love to see Wings/Pens III, especially now that we have the motivation of wanting to knock them off their championship pedestal and show that the Wings are not "done" as a good team, but the odds are not in Detroit's or Pittsburgh's favor.

Nope, the 2001 Stars never made it past the second round. It was Colorado over St. Louis believe it or not. I agree that it is tough to make it 3 years in a row, but it has happened before. So why not?

  17. I think more has to be done to protect the stars. I hate the NBA, but I'd adapt this principle: If you want your superstars scoring alot more goals, then you call ticky tack penalties on players that hook or interfere the superstars, and you let the tickytack stuff go on the 4th line gritty players. It's an option that will allow the game to open up alot more. It will speed the game up. You'll see more ice time for the stars. I mean, imagine Datsyuk puck handling around players when all the opposing player can do is put a stick on Datsyuk's stick or check Datsyuk cleanly?

I think the style the wings play is far more exciting than any other team plays.

"Protecting the Stars" would only add to the problem of making the league seem biased.

Some would argue that the league did just that by not suspending Malkin this year or Pronger in 2007.

All the league needs to do is enforce the rules across the board from start to finish. If the offender is NHL poster boy Crosby, then so be it!!

  18. It's funny you should say that about NHL Center Ice and the NHL Network. I've had Center Ice since the first time it was available and I've been thinking the same thing. I'm tired of watching the players play by one set of standards during the regular season and then having a rule shift seemingly during each successive round of the playoffs.

My issues run deeper than just the officiating, though. The change of schedule (which didn't occur for any of the previous rounds), the 3 game in 4 night scenario (or 4 in 6 if you wish), the constant focus on Crosby that the league has taken.

It makes it easy to be a conspiracy theorist when the broadcasters, who in many cases played, coached and call games on a full-time basis cite non-calls and oversights and point out a media bias toward one team.

One of my favorites was in an interview with Mike Babcock regarding the Pens fan Center Ice commercials in which it looked as if the Pens won the cup last year.

I also disagree with the "marketing reform" comment. I doubt that the NHL is gaining fans and viewership based on their marketing strategy (push the Crosby, it's beginning to turn). Besides the cup lift commercial, which by the way is the best piece of marketing I've seen for the NHL, it is largely focused on a single team and single player. Unless you're a Pens fan you've got to feel slighted by the league.

I full well believe that the NHL is going down the toilet. Short of some new "band-wagon" Pens fans this season, what have they actually gained. Any self-respecting hockey fan who watched the finals had to be utterly disgusted at the product on display. The league talked big about reducing the interference, clutching, and hooking in the neutral zone and at the blue line, but in the finals they rarely called it and when they did they called it inconsistently. That's why we had what boiled down to 6 one goal games and a blowout.

I've spent my life watching hockey at all levels. I do a lot of travelling and have had the opportunity to watch AHL, ECHL, CHL, WHL, and NHL games. I've not seen what I saw in this series in any of the lesser minor pro leagues. I'm very much beside myself at what has transpired.

The good news is is that the whole "Push the Crosby" marketing scheme will ultimately backfire on both the league and the Penguins organization.

Do you think his teammates will become somewhat annoyed with Crosby getting all of the attention even though he did not carry his team to a victory?

  19. The stock of the "NHL Product" went way down in my book after seeing Bettman hand Crosby the Cup.

As I watched in disgust, I could not help but wonder why the league must shove this guy down everyone's throat. He is not even the best player on his team, yet he was first to hoist the cup despite being ineffective all series!!

But, there he is front and center and basking in all of the glory despite many of his teammates being far more deserving.

The crappy officiating and the general bias toward the Penguins and Crosby make the league a joke.

  20. i started the thread being somewhat sarcastic. I realize the team that played better won. However, I do not believe the best team won.

And I think that was the Wings problem. They know they are the better team and it got to their heads. They thought, " hey we are up 2-0, this will be a cake walk then " so we lost 2 but got under their skin in game 5 like we did Chicago so it is ours to win now" and became complacent and lost the series as a result. :ranting:

  21. I agreed that the Pens deserved to win......but not ALL Wings fans on this forum know how GREAT & TALENTED the Wings are, they do not know how each player is feeling on game day.....there are things that none of us know that might be going on with the team....if we all knew everything, then so would the Pens and they would play on it. I AM NOT making excuses for the Wings....the better team won tonight, as much as it pains me to say that......but if a person is not an actual Wings player, then they have no right to say that that player did not play to his potential.......

That would be like you telling me (even though we've never met and you were watching TV or live and saw me play softball a million times)...that just because I didn't win the Championship game that I didn't 'play to my potential"...for all you know, I could have had a pulled muscle, torn muscle, broken toe, dislocated shoulder, parent pass away.....swine flu, etc.......) The fact of the matter is......I believe that the Wings play to their full ability.....HAVE I SEEN BETTER BY THE WINGS.....ABSOLUTELY.....but do they play the same every game, NO.....does any team....NO.....But I love them all the same. And that's all that matters.

Again, I am devistated the Wings lost.....absolutely devistated, will I bash them and talk bad about them...ABSOLUTELY NOT! I wouldn't tell my 8 year old son he didn't deserve to win his ball game just because he lost, I wouldn't tell him he needed to be off that team, I would say, GOOD TRY, BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR. ....(yes I know the Wings aren't 8 years old, it's teh example of "trying your best" that Im going for.....) As I said before, a person does not know what a players BEST is unless they are that player......

You are right, I do not know what a player's best is, however, I have seen better by this team and wonder what happened tonight.

A big problem with kids and sports these days are parents and coaches putting far too much pressure on them to win like they are going to be the next Wayne Gretzky or something instead of just letting them play and I commend you for that.

However amateurs and professionals play the games for far different reasons. Amateurs stand to benefit by having fun and learning life lessons while pros stand to benefit by earning millions a year and have fans shell out big $ to watch them play a kids game.

To amateurs, it is just a game, to professionals, it is their career.

The fact is that they treated this like it was just another game in November instead of game 7 of the SCF.

They had personal issues? So what!! This is the big game now handle it like professionals or don't you dare ask for 8 mil a year and expect fans to spend 100 + to watch your lazy asses play a kids game!! :ranting:

That said, I am happy with the Redwings season as they exceeded our expectations. It just pisses me off that they did not take this game for what it was.

  22. First of all I just want to say that we did not deserve to win the Cup with the way we played the last 2 games, the effort simply was not there and we definitely reverted to our regular season ways with the "we'll start trying after we've dug ourselves a big hole" mentality- there are about 3 players from our team I feel bad for- Ozzie (hung out to dry with almost no offensive support the last 2 games), Filppula (played pretty well most of the series, one of the only forwards I noticed competing hard most of the time), and Abdelkader (kid came in cold and scored 2 huge goals the first 2 games and then gets benched for a guy whose only real worth is winning faceoffs)

Also no one likes to talk about it or admit it but injuries caught up with us- A LOT of guys were significantly banged up, we'll find out who was really hurting over the next few days, and I think in the long run it was having to go through the gruelling Anaheim series that ended up costing us, that series took so much out of them and they never had time to recover

One thing I really don't like about how the series went was the officiating (I know, another excuse) BUT I do feel that the Pens got some big breaks at crucial times- looking at the box scores in the series, the Pens got the first PP or first two PP in six of the seven games, that's kinda fishy, and there were several blatant non-calls the refs just let go (I'm sure we can all think of several)

What worries me is that the Pens tried their best Anaheim impersonation against us and it worked- they knew they would get away with all the subtle interference and late hits b/c it's the playoffs, and the worrisome part is that other teams are going to try and emulate that since it won the Pens the Cup

Ultimately it's a shame we couldn't overcome all the adversity we were saddled with, and it's actually pretty amazing we came so close despite everything, but man, this one's gonna sting for a long time

I would not be too concerned as this "Ducks Style of Play" you mention is nothing new to the game. It won the Flyers a lot of games in the 70s, including two Cups, the Devils the Cup in 95 and so on. Hell, it got the Flames and Oilers past the Redwings and on to the finals a few years back. That style has earned the Wings a few victories in the post season as well.

They beat the Ducks partly b/c they stepped up to them physically

It is simply the nature of the beast and given the playoff successes of the last 3 years, the Wings have adapted well to it since 2006, wouldn't you say?

  23. Yeah, even in tonight's game they made plenty of UNFORCED ERRORS, sloppy outlet passes on powerplays and otherwise, and I don't know, they just seemed discombobualted(sp?).

Not that I'd really like to see it b/c it would mean we didn't make it, but it would be interesting to see what an Anaheim/Pitt series would be like, and I'd also like to see the Pens have to go through the Ducks before reaching the Finals and see how "fresh" they'd be

Well, hopefully the Ducks won't even make the damn playoffs next year!! I will keep my fingers crossed. I hate/have no respect for them and would love nothing more than to see them finish dead last next year.
