The Abdelkader or Weiss buyouts should not have any bearing on whether or not Nielsen is bought out. Neither should the expansion draft. Pending UFA's are considered qualifying players and can be exposed in the expansion draft. Not all of Filppula, Ryan, Gagner, Helm, Erne, Glendening will be traded at the deadline, and those that aren't could be exposed to Seattle. Nielsen is not needed for the expansion draft. And we have enough protection spots for our promising, younger forwards with or without Nielsen.

I would rather any player in the organization get ice time over Nielsen. He's been that bad. When you have a player that has performed that poorly, you buy him out. Yzerman did it with Abdelkader, and I think he should do it with Nielsen. We'll see...

Yes, buying him out now keeps in on the books for four years, but buying him out next year keeps him on the books for three years. It's only a difference of one year, and about $600K in that final year. And that's not even factoring in the real money saved by buying him out a year earlier. Saving real dollars should matter any time, especially in the middle of a global pandemic...

Definitely an issue with term. I'm assuming Yzerman wants to continue with the short-term contracts, and Bertuzzi wanted to be locked in long-term.

I can also see it the other way... Yzerman maybe wanted to lock him at a longer-term for between the two prices but Bert wanted a shorter term so he can improve production and score a bigger contract next go-around. Who knows, to be honest.

Abdelkader never should have been bought out. He's on the books now for 6 years instead of 3 when we have like $15 million in cap space. Not needed. He could've done Erne's job for at least another season if not more. Bad management.

Erne is better than Abdelkader. Abby was only going to hinder playing time for a younger guy or sit out. Yzerman had the excess cap space to make the move and it makes perfect sense with where the team is at right now.

Yeah, would be a great add, but I don't see how we can pull off a trade involving Laine without including two + major pieces. I'd assume Seider would have to be included and that would be a nonstarter for me.

I guess you need to assess who would be the bigger impact player... I would be tempted to deal Seider if it meant getting Laine. Tempted doesn't mean I'd pull that trigger, though.

  4. Marleau apparently wants Thornton to join him in San Jose. Interesting but I can't imagine SJ committing to both of them if they want to win. Thornton has taken a huge step down.

Also, crazy to see Hoffman and Granlund still waiting for contracts. I'm sure there are others, too.

The story is as old time.  All alcoholics or people with substance abuse problems cant be lumped together as having the same situation either.  A ton of athletes whether its hockey, basketball, football, soccer, tennis, wrestling , boxing struggle with substance abuse.  The toll these sports take on not only your body by pushing it passed its limits day in and day out, but the mind as well is the worse part.  Being on the road all the time, away from family for extended periods of time would be a different kind of lonely.  Its no mystery why falling to substances happen in these cases.

The amount of people the struggle and deal with it without getting any help, without anyone even knowing they are struggling to me personally have character too.  They show up for work every day, some even maintain an extremely positive outlook about everything too, then when work is over they suffer in silence, alone.

Bobby Ryan woke one day and wanted to change himself for the better, good on him.  To me it shows character for him to not only make the decision but see it through.

Very well stated. I have family who have struggled with alcoholism and maintained respectable careers, had loving families, were great parents and grandparents, and eventually were able to seek help with what they were struggling with. It's easy for some to throw shade on something they themselves have zero clue about. That shows pretty poor character, especially when they double down on it.

This has been a great thread, and it's lasted a long time. The off-season is still among us and there is still tons to talk about, so please, let's not get this thread locked of deleted.

I'm with you, which was the point of my first response, to say let's keep things on the topic of hockey and not start this nonsense of, obviously, fanning the flames.

Ken Daniels son lacked character. That's why he chose to push heroin up his veins.

Bobby Ryan woke up everyday, drove himself down to the liquor store, pulled out his black amex, bagged his booze, drove home, opened it up, made a drink, and didn't stop till the bottle was gone. None of those things were his choice though...

TIL trauma, mental illness, and behavioral health issues = strong character

I'm trying to talk hockey. @krsmith17 is the only one flipping out cause his daddy was an alchy or something.

This is a crap response, man. You're just adding on to the nonsense that a certain troll in here started. You want to talk hockey, yet we need to read your "hot take" on what your think is going on with someone vehemently disagreeing with someone who clearly doesn't understand the content they're trying to troll others on. You don't either, given your ignorant response. Instead of trying to steer the conversation back, you just fanned the flames. Bravo. You and the troll have shown pretty bad character here.

You're a literal piece of s***. I'm not an alcoholic (I barely drink), but I know plenty of people that are / were, and to hear you say that those people "lack character" is f***ing disgusting. Alcohol / drug addiction is an illness, not a choice. Go tell Ken Daniels that his son "lacked character"...

We need to stop feeding the troll. He's a lonely dude, that much is fairly obvious. It would be nice to have hockey conversations on this site without one person dragging it all down into the mud. Having worked with all types of folks working through trauma, mental illness, behavioral health issues, it's evident he has no clue what he's talking about (as is usually the case).

Damn , id have done that . Dont think hed have come here though

Yeah, that's the challenge really, for any of these players who are more in demand. They have to choose between going to a possible contender or a team that is in the early stages of a rebuild. It's tough, but that's another reason why I feel Yzerman has done a very good job of attracting the players he has. Ryan, Greiss, Stecher, Merrill, Namestnikov... They all very much seemed to WANT to come here, to be Red Wings, and help this team grow.

D looks good but I’m gonna throw in my preferred forwards line-up where a certain player is not included.

    Bertuzzi - Larkin - Mantha

    Fabbri - Namestnikov - Zadina

    Svechnikov - Filppula  - Ryan

    Timashov - Glendening - Gagner

Does he need to "Erne" his way back on to the roster?

I think there's a real possibility that the top line could be broken up.

I think Ryan is a lock to at least start in the top six, maybe even on the top line with Larkin.

I do think Fabbri will be the odd man out of the top six, whether that's at center or wing.

I don't think Nielsen will be a regular in the lineup, potentially bought out or waived.

I think Zadina would benefit from playing on the first line with Larkin and Bertuzzi.... I think it makes sense to spread your offense out a little bit so you put someone like Mantha on the second line for Namestnikov to feed pucks to.

I would give Zadina a chance on the first line, but dude, that is a very nice looking roster (for the players we have). It's also refreshing to see no Nielsen or Helm.... haha. Beautiful! Oh, almost forgot about Erne. Maybe have Erne and Timashov alternate. They need to assess both to see what's what.

  11. I have no doubt that Yzerman was interested in Krug, Turris, Shattenkirk, etc.... I also have no doubt that he called about Fleury and may even still be involved in a 3 team trade that send Fleury to Buffalo. I also have no doubt that the Red Wings and Tigers like most professional sports teams are not in the greatest position financially... I just don't believe that what this guy is saying about the Wings isn't true for the majority of teams in the league due to the season cut-short and uncertainty about when things will get back to normal.

  12. Bertuzzi - Larkin - Zadina
    Fabbri - Namestnikov - Mantha
    Ryan - Filppula - Gagner
    Helm - Nielsen - Glendening

    Nemeth - Hronek
    DeKeyser - Stecher
    Staal - Merrill
    Biega & Cholowski working in

    Is this guy legit?

I think so, maybe? Craig Custance follows him, so that is something.

At some point this year, I want Namestnikov and Svechnikov on the same line just to hear announcers fumble over their names :P

Really though, pulling full Svechnikov to at least get a call up at some point.. sucks that he had such a bad injury at such a key time. I hope he can bounce back and at least be some decent secondary scoring in the middle six.

Ummm.... I'll do you one better:

    Timashov-Namestnikov-Svechnikov
    Setkov - undrafted-kov

How do you figure? Do think Ryan takes the 2nd line wing?

Man theres some players who arent bad left available who’ll come in dirt cheap ... if there was any way of fittng in duclair x1 it would be nice cause i think hed be capable of getting 25-30 and that would at least get us a 2nd +  (course if we take on a bad contract with assets scratch this)

Id be up for this one more ...  if yzerman isnt planning on bringing cholowski full time erik gustafsson would be a nice option x1 , capable of producing offense on the back end which we lack and if he can produce He’d be a good trade bait as well

I feel like Yzerman is done unless he has designs to move Nielsen, Helm, etc out still.

  15. 9 minutes ago, nyqvististhefuture said:

I agree with that but id be down with duclair or someone x1 that can bring a significantly better return at the deadline than what we currently have to offer

I just want Yzerman to nab a decent upgrade at center. I'm just not sure how I feel about moving Fabbri to center this year.

    Soderberg
    Galchenyuk
    Namestnikov
    Haula
    Granlund
    Thornton (just kidding)

Absolutely. That's why I said "backup". Assuming both can stay healthy, I think it will be a pretty even split. Maybe roll the hot hand for a few games here and there, but for the most part, back and forth between the two.

I'm just happy not to have to deal with Jimmy "starts hot, gets injured, plays like garbage" Howard. He had some good seasons, but he was never going to be the goalie we needed, even if we were a contender at any point. For clarity, I'm not saying Bernier or Greiss are necessarily leagues better, but we all knew what Howard was going to offer in the last few seasons (after 16/17).

  17. 8 minutes ago, krsmith17 said:

Hopefully he can put up similar numbers as a "backup" to Bernier this season.

I think they'll be 1a/1b to be honest. It'll be a pretty even split to see if Greiss can do the same in his second season and then Yzerman can assess the situation and see if he wants to extend Bernier, promote a prospect, or try and bring in a marquee guy.

Greiss and Bernier have both shown over their careers that they can handle more games and play, relatively, well.

The please dear god don't suck as much as last year checklist: Goalie + 2C + offensive D man

Greiss, Johnson... that's the most likely scenario right now if we go UFA route for both. RHD is tougher with what's left. Maybe one of Vatanen, Hamonic, Ceci, or Pysyk? All RHD... although Ceci is a more defensive defenseman, I believe.
