Pierre LeBrun of ESPN tweeted just before noon Tuesday that the Detroit Red Wings have offered the most money to free agent Jaromir Jagr, making Detroit a frontrunner for the Czech winger.
Money obviously isn’t everything, but it is clearly playing a part in Jagr’s decision-making. The fact the Wings are already offering the most, coupled with the Jagr’s expressed interest in playing for Detroit, make it seem like this marriage will be a lock shortly. While the terms of the proposed deal are not known, you have to imagine it couldn’t be much more than the one Mike Modano got last year ($1.25 million).
The Red Wings franchise has to be hoping Jagr would be able to add more to the team than Modano did last year. Jagr was a dangerous scorer in his prime with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but nothing guarantees he still will be. The former Penguin, Washington Capital and New York Ranger is 39 and will turn 40 halfway through next season. His age alone, plus the wear and tear of more than 1,000 career games played, has to be a cause for concern.
Jagr is no longer the 100 point-per-year player he was in the 90s, but if he could recapture just a fraction of what he accomplished during his second stint with the Rangers, the Wings would have to be happy. He would fit nicely on the second or third line and could be a huge boon for a Detroit offense than had trouble producing in the second round of the playoffs last year.
The last three years of Jagr’s career have been spent in the KHL playing for Omsk Avangard, which is certainly different than the NHL. Despite the league being far less superior than the NHL, he still showed some promise with more than 50 points in two of the three seasons. Nothing says those numbers will translate back to the NHL — they certainly did not for Jiri Hudler, who also had a stint in the KHL — but no one will know if they will until he plays in the league again.
If the Red Wings dedicate a lot of money to him, then signing Jagr could be a risky proposition. At the same time though, if they sign him and make a serious Stanley Cup run, then it would be worth it. Sure, he is almost 40, but if there is one thing we know about the Detroit Red Wings, it is that they can handle older players and revive their careers with surgical precision.
