Jasper84 reacted to TheXym in 4/4 Penultimate GDT - Red Wings @ Penguins - 7:00 PM ET
Hirose had a nice feed to set that up. I’m in Pitt for a conference.

Jasper84 got a reaction from F.Michael in GDT6!
These kids have been fun to watch this pre-season. It's been several years since I've last watched a Wings game that was fun to watch like these. The mistakes that happen this year to me, seem different than the ones from the past few seasons. Those mistakes were more laziness it seemed to me, like the guys didn't care. I am not seeing any laziness this pre-season, so when mistakes happen, they aren't as frustrating to watch.

Jasper84 got a reaction from ChristopherReevesLegs in German League Reinstituting Relegation
There isn't any sending down players anywhere in the Seria A. A player is either good enough to play, or he isn't. If it's a matter of not having enough room, they can lend a player to any team in any league.

Haven't watched much this playoffs, but I've watched this entire game. These last 10 minutes are making me miss Red Wings playoff hockey so much.

Jasper84 reacted to ChristopherReevesLegs in Holland and Blashill expected to return
Glad I'm not the first to mention this.
Should Holland have started the rebuild sooner instead of holding on to the playoff streak? Sure, I won't disagree with anyone who wants to argue that point. However, all of you who see Hollands name and automatically scream about the sky falling, cannot claim these last 2 seasons of rebuilding haven't been wildly successful on his part.
Tatar = 1st, 2nd, 3rd (fantastic haul for a middle 6 forward) Mrazek = 3rd, 3rd (great haul for a backup goalie that could be in Europe next year) Sheahan = 3rd (sucks we couldn't get more, but his value was at an all time low and we needed the cap for AA) Ott = 6th (fair) Vanek = 3rd (fair) Smith = 2nd, 3rd (highway robbery with Smith in the minors screwing up NYR's books) Jurco = 3rd (fantastic haul for an AHL/NHL tweener) Datsyuk = 2nd (between a rock n a hard place, traded out Chychrun for Cholo and got the cap space, fair) Kindl = 6th (thrilled just to get anything) I'm not at all mad about a single trade he's done since the rebuild started. And the Mrazek, Tatar, and Smith trades have me particularly happy. For a man who's never had to rebuild before he's doing grade A quality work so far. If you need every roster player to be traded in order to be happy, I think you're being a bit unrealistic with your expectations.
Where I do draw issue, and where I think most of this boards frustrations truly lie, is with Blashill coming back. The whole "fresh voice" thing hasn't worked at all. Young players who had bright futures under Babs almost immediately regressed, and he's getting subpar performances from our vets as well (though aging plays a role with some).
If we should damn anyone right now it's Blash, and if you wanna put Holland on blast, blast him for keeping Blash, otherwise Holland has been fantastic the last 2 seasons.

Jasper84 got a reaction from Hockeymom1960 in Bad Fans?
This is mostly about me, but I'm sure lots of others relate.
I've always considered myself to be a huge Wings fan, I haven't missed a game in I don't even remember how long. Even this season, I still have every game on tv, but it's mostly background to me working on more productive things. Where I feel dirty, is I want the Wings to score, but I want them to score 1 less than the opposition. I understand that short term suckage = long term success, but does that make me (and others like me) a bad fan?
I just want that #1 OA pick damnit!!!

Jasper84 got a reaction from LadyRedWing in Some good news for Holland haters
I'm not a Holland hater, but I also don't think he should be given a new contract as GM here. It is sad though, thinking that he could be going to another franchise. If he does, I wish him the best. Either way, it's time we see a new GM in Detroit.

What? That's crazy and I couldn't be happier with that return.

Part of me wants this to happen just because the Leafs fans are getting all worked up and don't want him. The other part of me doesn't want to give him up for what the leafs would pay.

Jasper84 got a reaction from amato in Arena Parking
So I went to last night's game and took my dad along with me and wanted to just update this thread with my thoughts on the place.
Beautiful arena, no doubt. My only knock on it is the seating. They really stuffed those seats in there - at 6'0, my knees have never been so cramped. Even my dad at about 5'8" was a little cramped. Still, as much as the seating sucks, it still wouldn't prevent me from going a game there.
I also now understand why the arena looks empty on TV. Unbelievable the amount of people that are watching the game from the concourse on the screens! I guess a lot of people go to the game just to be in that environment, but don't really care to watch the game in the bowl, they are content with hanging out in there and watching it on the screens. Curious if this will change when the Wings get good again actually.

That was a pretty goal, ugly 3rd period. But why did we snag any points at all? I love this team, but they aren't doing themselves any favors.

Jasper84 got a reaction from Hockeymom1960 in 1/23 GDT - Flyers @ Red Wings - 7:30 PM EST (NBCSN)
I wonder if 2016-2017 Sheahan would have scored either of those. Feel bad for the kid, but it happens.
Bert for the game winner.

So you're subtly saying that we needed this call in our favor and another 5,000 more of these. You got me, I agree.

Jasper84 reacted to Dabura in Tatar Re-Signs 4 Years $21.2M ($5.3M AAV)
He's not overpaid.
Mike Halford summed it up pretty well:
Tomas Tatar has been Detroit’s most consistent goalscorer over the last three years. He’s netted 29, 21 and 25 in each campaign, for a grand total of 75 — more than Phil Kessel, Patrick Marleau and Matt Duchene have scored over the same timeframe.
Now, Tatar wants to be paid accordingly.
Helene St. James:
The 75 goals he has scored from 2014-15 through 2016-17 ranks 31st overall in the NHL.
Tatar is a really good top-six scoring winger and a solid (if unspectacular) first-line scoring winger. And, according to the conventional possession metrics, he's an elite possession-driver.
$5.3M x 4 is a really good deal for the Wings.
He's performed above his pay grade in each of the past four seasons.
2013-14: 19 goals and 39 points in 73 games. Cap hit: $630K. 2014-15: 29 goals and 56 points in 82 games. Cap hit: $2.75M. 2015-16: 21 goals and 45 points in 81 games. Cap hit: $2.75M. 2016-17: 25 goals and 46 points in 82 games. Cap hit: $2.75M. He's been performing like a $5M player, and now he's getting $5M. So, the only "demand" that his new contract makes is "Keep doing what you're doing."
The team is bad because we lack top-end talent at every position. That's not on Tatar, it's on the people who run the organization and construct the team. Tatar is not The Problem. Tatar has not been holding us back.

Jasper84 reacted to kliq in 2017 Draft
I will say, I wanted Vilardi like mostly everyone on here, but when 8 teams passed him over and then another two, I couldn't help but wonder why. I watched the kid play once in person, and he didnt impress me at all. If anything the kid on the Spits that really impressed me was Jeremy Bracco. That kid can skate!
Very good point. It is funny how when Det drafts a good kid Holland gets zero credit, but when its a bad pick he gets 100% of the blame. Definite double standard.

Jasper84 reacted to xtrememachine1 in 2017 Draft
First, I'd like to say everyone dumping on Holland and saying he's an "idiot" or whatever need to understand he's not making these decisions entirely by himself. These draft picks are the collective input from scouts, coaches, staff, ownership, etc. Some of you act like Holland is just ignoring the voices of reason and doing whatever he wants. Ultimately, he makes the decision, but he's making these decisions based on the input from a lot of other people.
Second, while there are players I would have rather drafted in the first round, I have to give him credit for going against the grain. Back in the 90's, everyone looks for high octane offensive minded players and we went with speedy two way guys. Since we were pretty much the only team going in that direction, we had our pick of pretty much anyone we wanted. Today, the game has changed and there are a lot of teams drafting those types of players, trying to replicate that success. There's also a lot of teams shifting their defensemen to be more offensive minded puck moving, speedsters. After watching this draft, the Wings are clearly moving towards being a bigger, more physical team, which kind of makes sense. Most teams are not built the way the Wings are apparently going to be built now. Its a copycat league and if everyone is building their team to be fast, who's going to handle these big forwards standing in front of the net? Who's going to be strong enough to get the puck off our power forwards? Maybe this will end up not being the best idea and it won't work, but I'm going to give Holland and the rest of the front office decision makers credit for trying to do something different. Nobody ever got ahead by being like everyone else.

Jasper84 reacted to Dabura in 2017 Draft
I'm saying we feel he's a real good player, obviously he's got some real good size, and that's something we feel we lack in our forward group, obviously he's real good on the power play, obviously he's a real good he's a good real obviously defensively responsible responsible defensively real good big body boy oh boy atta boy kiddo way to go kiddo bingo bango he's big and the Wings needed to get bigger up front and that's exactly what they did this is the power forward we've sorely needed he's a dynamic player who can do it all he's probably the next Holmstrom except bigger and better and he's real good and good real and y'know we feel he gives us a real good package of real good defensively good real defense power play net front real good real big body. Defensively responsible.
