    Captain Z

X1000 Datsyuk is flashier, Z will never make the kinda plays Datsyuk does however when Babcock needs somebody to shut a guy down he goes with Z. This is a great problem to have so this isn't a Dats vs Z thing. I love to watch Z in the zone, his stick work and positioning is so good, Datsyuk's stick work is obviously even better but that s*** ain't even human.

    What's Kenny Holland's Offseason Plan?

x1000 Its 2003 just not quite as crazy, in the last 21 years there have been a number of times where after a particular series or game it looked pretty dark. In all those circumstances Kenny and Co came through and made the necessary tweaks and they brought home yet another cup. Even if you don't think Kenny can do it, that he and the organization were lucky or now maybe they are too old you still owe him a chance. He's helped to give us 21 years of spectacular hockey and I believe a bunch more we just need to be patient. I do think however the wings really need a 2nd/3rd line scorer with speed. Speed and grit would be nice but that's a tall order.

Time to win or go home, luck or not Wings better come to play.

3/21 GDT : Red Wings 1 at Rangers 2 (OT)

They played well with the exception of Datsyuk, they all did about what they are supposed to do. Zetterberg looks like himself and even Conks was good. Don't know what Datsyuk was thinking on the OT goal, not sure what he saw to make him double the dude coming over the line, you knew they would send it to the open and then bam its in the net. He'll be fine, everyone makes mistakes. I don't understand the panic on this board, when healthy they can play with anyone and have proven so. When guys go down your team is going to get worse and if you lose 8 or 9 guys your going to lose a bunch of games. The starters are the starters for a reason.

Datsyuk knows he has been awful.

LOL he is always funny Z&D will come around, they are too talented not to. Hockey is a funny game some times you score alot on junk and sometimes you work really hard and make good plays and nothing.

11/15 GDT: Red Wings 1 at Blues 2

The only thing that really concerns me so far is they aren't clearing the lane on shots. When things aren't going well they are firing 10 maybe 15 shots directly off shinpads, sometimes it is unavoidable but when you have more time say on the PP you have to clear the lane. Last night for some unknown reason they kept trying to take everything into the slot. The Blues knew where they were headed and the wings just kept turning it over there. Perimeter play can suck but sometimes you got to take the slightly longer shot to open the slot up. Regardless they weren't in this one, super sloppy and alot of nonchalant type play.

Datsyuk & Zetterberg have been split up

As an aside from the forward's discussion how odd is it not to be talking about Kindl-Ericsson. They haven't been perfect but certainly capable for a bottom paring.

11/1 GDT: Wild 2 at Red Wings 1 (OT)

By hook or crook just win. 3-1 Wings Jimmy Howard has the hat trick after getting tired of waiting for someone to score.

10/28 GDT: Sharks 4 at Red Wings 2

Good to see Howard back in net, win or lose all I want to see is a team that is hungry on the fore-check and willing to work.

10/25 GDT: Red Wings 1 at Blue Jackets 4

The year after with Hossa was even worse, there were a ton of games where they didn't really play the first two periods and then put 4 or 5 goals up in the 3rd and left with a W and only really played 20mins. The bottom line is its too early, its too early to really know anything about this team or what a particular player is going to be. At the end of October I think you take a pretty good look and say here's maybe were we see some problems, then after Nov. you'll really know what's going on.

    Pronger injured after high-stick

x2 Said it better than I could. I don't think anyone should ever be forced to wear a visor but eventually somebody is going to lose and eye.

    What's up with Zetterberg?

Patience, the ZDC line isn't clicking right now. The idea is right and they are getting some good looks just no finish.
  14. Johnny Law

    Hudler?

Tuomo is a good player who would be a nice addition to the wings but he isn't a 2nd line center on the DRW. Dude does not move the puck efficiently enough for 2 line duties.

10/8 GDT: Red Wings 3 at Avalanche 0

They look good, nearly everyone looks like they have alot of drive....still only two games lets see where they are at the end of the month.

    Grade Holland

Solid B I still think they are one piece away, either a top 4 puck moving d-man to replace ericcsson or some secondary scoring preferably in a guy who can play some center but neither of those were really available.

    Brian Rafalski appreciation thread

Dude is going to be damn near impossible to replace, fantastic talent and really underrated by DRW fans. He was excellent at getting the puck up and out of the zone which is something other guys (salei/big rig) struggle with.

Bigger Picture Question - What was the deciding factor?

Logan Couture, we simply don't have second tier scoring like that with Franzen out of the lineup. Injuries certainly didn't help and Abdelkader and Hudler were not very good.

WCSF Game 3 GDT: Sharks 4 at Red Wings 3 (OT)

No excuses, just win, Lets go Red Wings!!
  20. Wings I think will do well, they match up better against the Sharks than Nashville and they play best when they feel they were embarrassed which I think to some extent they were last year. This will be a much different series than last year....

    Zetterberg leaves against Carolina

I saw this last night and was hoping in the morning they do they old "no big deal we will sit him until the playoffs" now it doesn't look so good. Z is just as important as Pasha and this season Z has carried the team for long stretches when Datsyuk was out. No ******* way I would have been playing him, Dats or Lidas.

3/30 GDT: St. Louis Rams 10 at Detroit Lions 3

I see two things First their positioning in terms of general defense is terrible, I'm not sure what this is about outside of Ericcson who just can't seem to figure it out and Kindl who is young. The rest know what to do and simply aren't doing it. Second and far more important is basic motivation. Simply put wining has become a way of life and they are no longer motivated by winning alone. Historically they have always taken some time off in the regular season however this year it seems to be the norm rather than the exception. This lack of motivation effects everything, they don't hit, the don't clear the net of people and pucks, there 1/4 second slow on everything, s***ty passes and lots of turnovers in the all important transition game. If a team is consistently loosing the battle for loose pucks that's a motivation work thing and that's what I think we are dealing with. This is really tough for Babs, yelling isn't going to work, hell I'm not sure winning is going to work the players have to find something to play for, maybe that's the playoffs maybe its not but were going to find out real soon.

    Believe

I think he's desperately trying to find a way to get Franzen going, in the past when guys were sucking (like hudler for example) he'd throw them on a line with Datsyuk. Its actually kind of a testament to Pasha's skills but guys just play better with him, he buys you lots of room and time and good things just kind of happen. Hank to some degree has a little of this too but he isn't as shifty so you don't get that kind of time and space. When things are going bad and the DRW need goals in an important game he goes back to the same old prudential rocks. Datsyuk & Z, Lidas and Rafalski, Z on the 5 on 3. Its actually a pretty good strategy if you think like I do that confidence is one of the most important attributes in the NHL. Get Franzen going get his brain making creative plays and then he can go back to playing with Flip.

    The Wings flipped the "switch"

This.....its unclear whether they just felt like playing for a period or from here on out.

    Jakub Kindl

I think some people need to be a little more realistic in what they expect from this kid. He played like 40 games with the Wings with stints in GR in between. The transfer between the AHL and the NHL is tough for the kind of game he plays, simply put he plays the anticipation game and the kind of plays your going to see at the AHL level is not nearly the same when you play with the big boys both from opposing players and those on your team. I think its undeniable that at the start of the year he was playing not to make mistakes, he would get the puck and quickly move it many times without taking a good look. Bad s*** happens when you play that way and he made a change, while not momentous he's making much better passes out of the zone and using his vision alot more. His positioning is generally good and he's starting to take the body more and be involved offensively. I feel that Ericsson has sort of shown what he can do where as Kindl seems to still be developing. Two things to remember are that the Wings have employed a newer strategy against the F1, they are one of I think three teams playing the side by side rather than the long pass behind the net. They aren't using this in the AHL let alone at lower level leagues and it has caused a few mix ups for guys like Lidstrom and Kronner let alone a rookie trying to unlearn 20 years of basic dman technique. Lastly and I will preface this with an I like Howard statement, the Wings D picks up alot of those s***ty rebounds he kicks out. I can't think of another team where you see all the dmen so committed to moving rebounds and that just isn't something he can really be prepared for. Give this kid some more time and lets see how he progresses.
