Not much younger. Erat produced at a much higher clip, and he never played with great offensive players. It will be interesting to see what he does in washingtons system, But the main thing is he's signed, and filppula isn't. That diminishes any value filppula would have over erat.

Martin Erat is a perennial .70-.85(5 seasons)winger playing in a very defensive system he is an incredibly consistent point producer. Filppula has only one season of .80 PPG not to mention he has 2 more years only a 4.5 million deal. While Filppula is a UFA. not to mention there is only a two year age difference. How can you think Filppula is at all comparable to Erat? That said I'm surprised Washington moved Forsberg, they must really want to make a push now.

Crosby's game has really developed, any defensive flaws he has is more than made up with his offensive dominance. Look at how good he is along the boards.

I hope you're right. I'd love me some filppula for that. He did have a breakout season last year though with .80 ppg, so if a team thinks he can do that consistently they may do offer him 4.5+

umm, not really. They hate losing Dorsett. And Brassard is currently tearing it up with New York tonight. New York might have became a better team. Gaborik also has a ton of injury history, how do you think we'd be feeling right now if his back/hip/groin started to act up?

Bolded are bottom 6 players, and Jarnkrok is a few years away from being the complete player Filppula is. Strong center depth is important, and we just don't have much in the way of prospects that play center. I hope Sheahan, and Ferraro can develop some scoring, but it's not very likely at this point.

Yikes, Tampa just traded away their 4th leading scorer and youngest player, Toronto still has no goalie, Florida did nothing like usual, Buffalo traded away their captain for prospects, Boston traded for Jagr and Redden(looking good for the 03 stanley cup not so much next year). Really Ottawa is the only one that really improved much. Just because we didn't go after doesn't signal the demise of a great franchise. You know what would? If we traded away Jarnkrok and Mrazek to Buffalo for pominville. Then Buffalo turns around and traded Miller for a huge scorer. And the Jarnkrok develops into the #1 center adn Mrazek turns into a Vezina candidate and we have to face them 4 times a year in division. That would be pretty s***ty no?

Tatar isn't a center. While Filppula plays a lot of wing his face-off, and defensive value is something that Tatar does not have at this time. I do agree Tatar is NHL ready, but not as a Filppula replacement.

Umm noo. Brassard is a .55 PPG 25 year old on a 3 million dollar deal. His value is Filppula++.they are close in terms of actual player skill, but not in contract value. and comparing John Moore to White is laughable. White isn't a 22 year old first round pick playing in his second season. He's a good young defenseman, that's defensively responsible. His value is between Smith/Lashoff. Mainly because of the RFA deal and age. And comparing Eaves to Dorsett is close in terms of point production, but absolutely not in terms of toughness and leadership, columbus fans are flipping out the most about losing this guy more than anybody else. It's hard to compare him to anyone on the Red Wings, he's Tootoo with better defensive hockey IQ(plays much more PK), and outstanding leadership(A). Realistically I don't think the Rangers would want what we could offer. They required roster players, Filpulla's value is not high being he'd be a rental, so you would have to add value on the defensive slot and they want Smith, we would try Kindl. So right now the Wing's are looking at Filppula, Kindl, and the 3rd part of the deal is tricky, who could dorsett be a replacement for? Remember Filppula's value isn't as high as Brassards, and Kindl's value is around equal, or less than Moore's, so I'd have to imagine they would want an improvement over Dorsett, they wouldn't ask for Eaves, Abby, Miller no, they would ask for Helm. And sorry that's not happening. Wings just weren't a good dance partner for New York. And people crying about signing injury riddled players like Samuelsson, Bertuzzi, Cola etc. would be flipping s*** if we traded away 3 roster players for a 32 year old 7.5 million dollar forward that is producing less than Samuelsson did last year, and his back/hip/groin starts to act up. Gaborik is a risky player, his injury history is extensive to say the least, and if he goes down the wings are not only out a top winger, but 7.5 million in cap, and 3 roster players. While the risk for Sammy was just 3 million cap, and a secondary scorer, much less risky. The only way I wanted Gaborik is if we traded away prospects, because the risk would be lessened, we wouldn't be a worse team if he goes down.

I'm not the biggest Kronwall fan, but he's 4th in league scoring for defenseman. While he's no Weber defensively, he's definitely worth his deal. And Sammy was coming off a .57 ppg year. if injuries are a factor, then why are people crying about not going after Gaborik whose hip/back/groin has nearly ended his career?

What roster players that we have signed would New York want? They would most likely be asking for Helm for sure, they really miss the heart and soul aspect, that's why they really wanted dorsett. Brassard is a .50-.60 PPG like FIlpulla, but younger and actually on a 3 million deal after this year, so his value is higher. and John Moore is a first round defenseman, that's 22 years old. I guess he's in between the value of Smith/Lashoff. And Pominville was had for our equivalent of Number #1 goalie and center prospects Jarnkrok, and Mrazek and now there might be word that picks were also involved from minnesota. That would really hurt the wings future, I'd really pass on that, and I really like Pominville.

Mattias Backman is one of our top defensive prospects, he's a 6'2, 20 year old playing in the SEL. He's got a ton of upside, and the hype train is just starting.

Trading Ville Leino for Mattais Backman isn't a good deal? Or how about trading matt Puempel for Tomas Jurco and Xavier Ouellett? How about signing Brunner, or Dekeyser? Or signing Kronwall to a cheap 7 year deal? I'm not saying he's been great. But some of these deals can look a lot better in a few years, he's not fleecing people like the Chelios trade days, but it's a different league now, not a lot of roster player for roster player type trades. Who would be your choice going forward?

Disappointing to be stuck cheering for a perennial playoff team. I'm ok with them not going after Pominville, that price was hefty. Gaborik is a risky risky move, he's struggling right now, and if he does decide to heat up there is always that chance of his back or groin giving out like when he was younger. Add in his salary, I'm ok with Holland not overpaying. Not to say I wouldn't do it, but it's not a clear cut deal that makes Columbus better in my eyes. Better offensively? Probably. Better team? We'll see.

He's also missed 6 months for a torn labrum, 38 games for hip surgery, 27 games for back injury, 34 games for groin strain, 16 games for hip flexor, 11 more games for a groin issue, and 10 games for /abdominal strain/left leg injury. He's been pretty healthy the last few years, but how do you think the fans would feel if he'd had Samuelsson's luck with breaking a finger on a shot, and then we'd be out 7.5 million... Not saying Gaborik isn't good, but you can't have it both ways. If you complain about Samuelsson's past and current injuries, you better acknowledge Gaborik's past.

You do understand Gaborik is producing just as much this season as Samuelsson did last season. Correct?

In what world does a 19 year old that played 67 games and 15 minutes a night have no upside? John Moore doesn't have the offensive upside, but he's a much better defensive guy and he hasn't played too well. But Smith hasn't exactly lit the world on fire this year either. I do think Smith is a better prospect, but it's not a huge difference.
