SiLkK19 reacted to kipwinger in 1/11 GDT - Red Wings at Kings - 10:30 PM EST
Osgood is a god damn embarrassment as an announcer. If he mispronounces another name, or uses improper grammar one more time, I'm going to switch to the Los Angeles feed.
I can't believe they fired Larry Murphy for a guy who can't speak correctly.

SiLkK19 reacted to wings4thecup06 in Looks like Tyler Bertuzzi is a ****** like his uncle
While Bertuzzi needs to dial it down a notch, its these kind of guys who play with a little bit of a feisty edge that the Wings really need IMO. Just watch our games with the sole purpose of looking for Wings players INITIATING body contact. There really isn't a lot of it. Ironically, when Z and Datsyuk throw their bodies around, the results are good.
Take a look at the great Wings teams that most of us on this board grew up with. Guys like Maltby, McCarty, Kocur, Shanny, Lapointe, Konstantinov. All willing to punish opposing players and rough it up a little to win. Balance that with the sort of high end scoring talent that this team is developing (in guys like Larkin, Nyquist, Tatar etc) and we may be able to go somewhere. Our D is way too soft. Ericsson, if he applied himself physically game in and game out, could be a FORCE. He's huge, and has some serious strength. None of the fights he got into last year were even close. Neil wanted a piece of him saturday, but you can tell he would have got hammered if the refs had let them go.
Kronwall hasn't played the body now really in the last few seasons, probably because he's now the number 1 d man and was also the primary offensive D man. I also think that his most recent suspension in the playoffs has signalled the death of anyone getting Kronwalled every again. He's too valuable to the team to miss time over a suspension, and he knows it.
This is why Brad Stuart was such a great addition in 07. He played with an edge that the D didn't have and he brought it physically night in night out. I'm not saying the wings need to change everything and go to a bunch of goons, but even 1 hard hitting D man on the back end, and one or two more physical forwards would go a long way in making this team more dangerous.

I don't like the play but I'll be honest, I'm excited to finally have some mean in our system.

he's the type of player you hate if he's on another team, but love to have on yours. We've all known that's the kind of player he is, and you don't get to that point without some general d-baggery.
It is what it is.
Do I like seeing it?
No.
But in the playoffs it'll help us if he can control himself.

SiLkK19 reacted to GoWings1905 in Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick
For an organization rapidly embracing a full youth movement, there doesn't seem to be much logic behind giving up Mantha and/or a first round pick. I personally don't buy it and hope Holland stays the course at this point. If drafting and developing is your thing, then you don't sacrifice that for Dion Phaneuf. Maybe three years ago with a younger Pav and Z, but not anymore.

SiLkK19 reacted to Wingzman91 in Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick
"Reporter" asks, " Would you be willing to trade the 1st or maybe a player like Mantha? "
'source' says, " Look, if someone wants to blow us away with an offer then of course I would consider it, I'm not doing my job otherwise. "
"Reporter" prints, " Wings open to moving 1st/Mantha. "
Fans use whatever scrap of evidence to support their personal feelings and the sun sets.

SiLkK19 reacted in Babcock granted permission to talk to other teams
Many crappy players have their name on the Stanley Cup, as with coaches. Don Cherry was a bit before my time as a coach, so I can't comment on his ability to coach. He's an entertainer now and plays to his audience. I'm not going to judge him as a coach based on what he does now, not to mention he's like 182. But I find his advice on this subject to be sound and based on personal experience.

SiLkK19 reacted to Richdg in DRW Free Agents / Salary Thread
Babcock is defense first coach. There is a reason for the saying "defense wins championships". because it is true. If the other team doesn't score you have greatly increased your chances to win. His focis is winning game 2-1 or 1-0. Go back the this past Olympics. Team full of the worlds best players and they played a puck control defense first system.
This was also Bowman's system. The left wing lock is all about reducing scoring. he threatened to tradeStevie Y if he didn't start to play d. Federov was the same way. Which is why he went from 120 point seasons to 80 point seasons.
Now if you are playing a defensive system to win, wouldn't you want to play the best defensive forwards? yes. Why have Z and Dat been stars for so long? Yes they score, but they are great defensively.
Now look at our prospects and their development. What part of the game takes the longest to develop? defense. What have most on this site complianed about? Our prospects "overripening" in the minors. What are they learning to do? It isn't offense, it is D. That is Babs/Hollands plan. Play good D or don't play here. IE Hudler and many others.

SiLkK19 reacted to DickieDunn in Rule 48: not working as planned.
That's what happens when you base your punishment on the result of the hit instead of the hit itself. An illegal hit should be punished as much if the other guy bounces right back up as it is if he's going to be out 8 weeks.

SiLkK19 reacted to Kira in Um, OK, not really sure this'll have the desired effect
My hubby says it's the color of the belly of a catfish. As he loves to fish, I'll take his word for it. It is appropriate, I suppose, since a) They throw catfish on the ice down there, and b) One is a scum-sucking bottom feeder, and the other is a fish.

SiLkK19 reacted to TheDetroitRedWings in Red Wings won't pursue David Clarkson
http://www.freep.com/article/20130702/SPORTS05/307020109/detroit-red-wings-free-agency-lecavalier-clarkson
Well, in my eyes that's even more disappointing than not getting Vinny. I really wanted Clarkson, but looks like he's asking for more than Holland is willing to pay. Personally, I think he's the type of player we should overpay to get... For now I'm gonna stick with the "in Kenny we trust" philosophy, but so far this has been quite a disappointing day...

SiLkK19 reacted to kipwinger in Lidstrom or Orr
Lidstrom, bar none. Orr didn't play defense. He had a good plus/minus because he put up a zillion points. Tighter defense and better goaltending would expose his "offensive prowess" and his defensive numbers would likewise suffer. Orr's over rated, Lids played in a time when scoring was harder, defensive assignments were tougher, and going "coast to coast" was almost unheard of. Even then he managed to win 7 Norris Trophies and and twice as many Stanley Cups and he was a factor in every one of them. Bobby was good, but score 150 going end to end against Weber, Suter, and Rinne. Not happening buddy.

SiLkK19 reacted to Dave in Lidstrom or Orr
It's the same reason Royce Gracie dominated in the early years of UFC, then proceeded to get dominated by the later generations of fighters.
Was Orr better than his competition of the time? Absolutely, no question. However, his competition is so far below today's NHL that his gaudy numbers would never happen in today's game.
Another good comparison would be Maltby dominating in juniors. He was way better than his competition, but he couldn't dominate like that against higher skilled players.

SiLkK19 reacted to Dabura in 2013 Stanley Cup Finals - Boston Bruins vs. Chicago Blackhawks
Bruins just swept the most dangerous team in hockey, limiting them to two goals. Two goals.
We almost beat the 'hawks in less than seven games.
I like Boston's chances.
