    1/1 GDT: 2011 Winter Classic

NHL ratings: Numbers up slightly for Winter Classic on NBC Saturday night Sports Media Watch | Jan. 3, 2011 2:01 p.m. "Pushed to primetime due to inclement weather, Saturday's NHL Winter Classic had a modest rise in overnight ratings on NBC," Sports Media Watch writes, adding, "The Capitals' win over the Penguins in the Winter Classic earned a 2.8 overnight rating on NBC Saturday night, up eight percent from last year (PHI/BOS: 2.6), but down a tick from 2009 (DET/CHI: 2.9). The 2.8 overnight is the second-highest for a regular season NHL game since February 1996 (regional: 3.0, FOX)."

GDT Stanley Cup Finals - Game 6

Is it just me, or was that the most anti climatic cup win in history?! No one is sure it went in, play goes under review, looking back while attempting to celebrate just in case it wasn't a goal. Very odd end to the finals, like a bad ending to an otherwise great movie. Kudos to Scotty Bowman and son.

    Stanley Cup Championship Gear Leaked?

This stuff has been in the last shop.nhl.com mailer for over 3 weeks. It just didn't have any logos and said teams to be determined. I thought this was smart because it gets leaked every year, but it apparently didn't work because no one seems to have seen it. I still have the catalog.

Your care less attitude about the fact that he left doesn't help your case. Most would rather not see him there, especially with the logo. I was afraid they would make a jersey for him which would have been utter blaspheme to Wings fans everywhere. I respectfully agree to disagree on this as well. I do wish him well on his journey and hope he returns in the future. I also wish Scotty Bowman well with the Hawks. And Paul MacLean possibly with the Blue Jackets.

Burn. You got me. I stand corrected. Says the man who rushed to stick a Lightning logo next to a picture of Stevie Y. Says something about you too, so lets not throw stones too hard.

    Ville Leino Appreciation Thread

The point is, he was a rookie. Not every rookie comes out of the gate blazing. They pitched him after half a season and he really didn't give him a chance. This is like when Howard played one game last season and everyone s*** on him after the game even though it was a complete lack of defense that cost them the game. Leino played during the worst part of the worst season in 20 years. He got the short end of the stick. Plain and simple.

Sidney Crosby - The most hated player in the NHL

I may be using strong words but that is because I am passionate about this. Mickey Redmond doesn't go on tangents every game because it has changed for the better. It is because it is nothing like it was when he played. He hates to see the game change as I, and others I'm sure do.

Sidney Crosby - The most hated player in the NHL

So a bastardized version of what the game once was is ok with you??? Then we do have to agree to disagree. I could care less if the game gets more viewers than the Stuperbowl. And yes, all American sports are tainted at this point. It's an American Idol society after all.

Sidney Crosby - The most hated player in the NHL

I am American. I just get lit up at the fact that we destroy things that are good. Why not welcome the sponsors on the jerseys. You know, have an easton logo, Gatorade, bengay, McDonald's, valvoline (zamboni oil), Toyota, etc. We already have the arenas named for millions. Makes perfect sense to go to an arena named after a bank. After all, you are just giving them your money right. How soon until Preparation H Arena or the Tampax Centre. When is enough enough is my point. Some people/things you just don't want to be in the mix. The league is attracting some bad apples and it is hurting it for the "fan that has been watching his whole life." I would love to see a Gordie Howe or Steve Yzerman Arena (or Joe Louis II for that matter) but I know it will be some company that slaps its name above the new home of the Red Wings that has nothing to do with the game. I cannot be the only one on this board that feels like that "fan". If I am, then it is far worse than I thought. Plus, I just like getting people revved up on these boards.

Sidney Crosby - The most hated player in the NHL

Nice. Cell phone company mentality. Screw the loyal ones, we need more money. There in lies the problem. It isn't a sport, it is a corporation. Canada lost hockey to the US and this proves that fact. Canadians were perfectly content with the sport but the beer drinking gut wearing football public of the US needed a hook to watch. Something to get them into the sport and dump millions on. Scoring too low, we'll fix that. Tired of games ending in a tie, welcome the shootout. Lack of cheerleaders got you down, ice girls (Thank god this hasn't caught on with every team). I give you American hockey. You're source for the stupid people I have to sit near when I go to games.

The moral of all of these previous points is that individuals are not a team. Game total scores are higher. Period.

I do agree with this. The Wings always tend to overcook players in the minors, but it seems to work well for some. You obviously haven't watched him in GR before he was deemed bad juju by the LGW boards. In retrospect, I will change that from "as good as" to "resembling" so as not to offend.

Sidney Crosby - The most hated player in the NHL

Hockey has been the Black Sheep of the sporting world in the US. They have looked for ways to get new viewers and this was the answer. A high scoring poster-boy everyone loves to hate that they shove down your throats. Like a David Beckham of hockey. Is it coincidence that scoring has gone through the roof over the last 10 years. No. People don't want to see tight games that end in 2-1 or for that matter 1-1. So they continue to pander to those people who never loved hockey in the first place and continue to change the setting and rules on the existing fans of the game. Shootouts anyone? Ovi-rated and Cindy draw viewers. That is why the 2011 Winter Classic is again with Pittsburgh and not one of the many other teams that are waiting for their frozen chance. Bury your head in the sand if you like, but Crosby is just part of the big corporate machine. Take him out of the equation and Hockey drops right back down in the ratings scale below water polo. It's a shame but it is true. Read this for fun. Circa 2006. http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/2006/05/17/15645/ I'll let you guess who fills the shoes of the "Controversy part".

    Ville Leino Appreciation Thread

Surprisingly, the Wings organization can make mistakes, and I believe this is one of them. But then again, I have stuck up for Leino since the beginning. I have watched him for years now in GR and he was by far one of the most promising. His stick handling was at times as good as Pavel. He created scoring opportunities and opened holes in the defense. He didn't do anything here because they didn't know how to use him. I believe he was the sacrificial lamb to the Wings s***ty year. They threw him out there unprotected and he got clobbered every shift. Philly has him up several pounds and he is now running guys on the ice. Big difference. This one will be regretted in the long run. He was one of the most promising guys in GR and we gave him up for Ole-Nothing and a 5th round pick. I can only hope that the next Zetterberg comes from that 5th round pick.

Sidney Crosby - The most hated player in the NHL

Real hockey fans hate Crosby for what he is, a whiny ***** of a person and poor role model for everyone, who just happens to excel at hockey. If he would keep his mouth shut, cut the cheap crap on the ice, and recognize that there are any other teams even in the NHL on the ice with them, then he would be great. Instead, we would rather watch any other person than him. The NHL is pandering to those who do not regularly watch nor understand hockey, but think it is cool because it is catching on. This is why we have Crosby, 10+ goal games, and shootouts.

Holland and Babcock messed up with Leino. He could have been great here. Philly put some weight on him and gave him a chance, and all we have to show for it is Ole and a 5th round pick. Let's hope we get something out of the pick at least.

    Rule/Game changes for next season...

It probably doesn't hurt that we tend to do poorly in shootouts. I can't be the only one thinking this as this news breaks. For the record, I personally hate shootouts. I think it is the dumbest thing they have added next to the trapezoid rule. However, players including goalies seem to enjoy the shootout as a "time to shine". NHL.com http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=530752 Half way down Holland on OT -- NHL general managers are meeting in Philadelphia Wednesday to go over a number of subjects. Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland told the Detroit Free Press he wants to see a change in the NHL's overtime format. "I'd like to see more games decided in overtime than shootout,” Holland said Tuesday. "I don't mind the shootout, I just don't want the shootout to decide so many games. "My suggestion is, extend OT from five minutes to eight minutes or from five minutes to 10 minutes," Holland said. "Then maybe do we go half of it four-on-four, half of it three-on-three? "I just want to have a conversation to see if other people feel like I do.

    Winter Classic set for 2011

And one more thing! If I were one of the many teams waiting for my turn in the Winter Classic (listen up New York), I would get together an old fashioned lynchin' staring your NHL poster boys Ovirated and Cindy Crybaby together and make sure they "couldn't make it" to the WC. Something along the lines of Nancy Kerrigan. You need knees to skate, right?! In all fairness, Washington hasn't been there yet. But this is just to wreck Bettman's wet dream like the Habs did in the playoffs. Thank you Habs.

    Winter Classic set for 2011

F#@K the NHL. F#@K Bettman. I am going back to only watching minor league hockey. This has gotten way out of hand. AHL/ECHL here I come. Yzerman to the f#@king Bolts, Pens in another WC within 3 years time, Wings raise ticket prices by $10 a seat this year, just waiting on Satan to buy a Snuggie because it has had to freeze at this point.
