  1. There's definitely some people who prefer a certain brand of hockey that have become disillusioned with it in it's current (or I guess you can also say evolving) state. What's also ironic is they also tend to be in areas that prominently involve hockey, as in, Canada, Great Lakes States, New England, etc. I think many people (particularly in my area) forget that the NHL is it's own brand of hockey entertainment, not the very definition of hockey itself. Similarly, I like baseball and basketball, but despise both the NBA and MLB and what they've done to both respective games on an entertainment level, and thus don't watch it at all. Hockey to the NHL is like a banana to a banana split.

After last nights game, I wonder if this is the brand Bettman had in mind? I do not care for Bettman but contrary to popular belief, the man is no dummy. I would find hard to believe he wants the new face of the NHL running around taking cheap shots. Is that style of hockey entertaining. Hmmm? Could Sean Avery could be the face of the NHL? He is certainly entertaining! Maybe to all of the WWE fans who do not understand the game. I guess for me that is were disillusionment comes from. I just now question Bettman's choice. Should just one player be the lone face of the NHL?

  2. Something to understand about marketing is it isn't exactly the most fair thing. It's about selling something. That's all. Do you really think of 300 million people in the US Barack Obama was the best Presidential candidate? f*** no. He was the most highly marketed and sold his brand very well. People bought into it. They do the same thing for certain ballot measures one votes on, they do it on products that's sold. An added boost to marketing over the last decade or two have replaced quality control, in essence. That's the way of the product (cereal, hockey, blabla) or a brand (Crosby, Obama, Kobe, etc.).

Nonetheless, it's stupid to doubt Crosby's accomplishments as not amongst the most elite in the NHL today. In all likelihood he's going to have 500 points at age 22, he's been to the Cup Finals twice by age 21 (still up in the air if he's going to win one this season), as the Captain of a team, several ASG's, and his impact is well documented..

There's really no ambiguity, unless one is a fellow Wings fan in denial.

Maybe not a wings fan in denial but it is possible that I am fan of the game who is in denial. I just want to see all the brands that are offered. Not just one. I have been a fan of the game for so long now that it hard for me to think from the perspective of the casual fan. The fact that Crosby can draw new fans to the game is not lost to me.

  3. You guys actually think a rusty Datsyuk, broken foot and all will actually be able to keep up with Malkin or Crosby! You gotta be freakin kidding me. He'll be lucky to play 10 minutes before Orpik destroys him and the pain shot wears off. The emotional boost the Wings get will be huge none the less. If the Pens survive the the first period they will roll.

The answer to your question is yes! The only thing I saw that that Penguins excelled at last night was over confidence. Datsyuk showed everybody on National TV why he is arguably the best player in the NHL. He is the NHL's benchmark for what complete two way player should be. On an off note: Dats and Malkin and Ovechkin on a line together would be something to see.

  4. lol.. i'm not disagreeing with you either. I just think that part of the reason the Hawks melted down so badly is because of their own inexperience. Consider that there are more of them than coach Q and while he shouldn't lose control of his club, part of it is on them too. I mean regardless of how young they are, they're still professionals in this league and it looked like they forgot that. They're what he has to work with and if they go all psycho-baby on him in the 3rd what more can the guy do? He can't bench 'em all, although he definitely should have sat that idiot Versteeg. Q's emotions got the better of him and he expressed them inappropriately but maybe that was to help take the focus off the kids and put it on himself. Who knows?

Bench them all! I like that thought. Yep, when you look at from the angle of them being kids. Hmmm, It seems he that he lost control of the playpen :D . Damn psycho-baby's :D

  5. The Hawks getting blown out in game 4 doesn't make them phonies, but they're kids. What did you expect from them really? They have a talented club but they're just not at the same level as Detroit. This being their first playoff experience in some time, it's only natural that emotions would run high. They melted down and suffered for it but that is a learning experience and my guess is they'll be better for it in the long run. That being said I'm hoping we kick the crap outta those kids on Wednesday... it's way past their bed time.

I am not disagreeing with what you are saying but don,t you think that Q's experience as coach should help them out in rough times. It seemed that his emotions were out of control which passed right through to the team. I expect a young team to have few meltdowns, but an experienced, playoff tested NHL coach? No way. It was like he was reading Coaching for Dummies, the uncensored version written by Mark Crawford.

  6. I love the way how Babcock implies in his comments that the reffing sux but he never uses words that he can get fined for. Even in this, Q has to learn from the master.

I thought Q and Babcock were friends? If so, does Q pay any attention to what his friend does and does not do?

  7. Before game 4, I was impressed with Chicago. Liked what they had to offer as a team. After what I witnessed in game 4, I am just disappointed. After challenging Detroit to two overtimes, I thought they were for real. Q knows the wings franchise well. It is hard to believe a coach in NHL with his experience would back that kind of play as a game plan. Especially against a team that just beat the Ducks. See my point? He must have nightmares about the Winged Wheel running him over repeatedly.

  8. I just read that myself and was appalled but not surprised. I'm sure he's upset about the officiating because it wasn't in favor of the Hawks, as it was in Game #3. I'm sure not one Hawks fan complained about the officiating in Game #3. Immature fans that cheer for an immature team.

I understand his dislike for the officiating. What I found amusing was the way he chose to solve the problem. I find it hard to believe that he is serious. At least I hope not.

  9. If any of the next games turn out like game 4 did, with the lopsided calls and favoritism toward Detroit (which we know will happen), here is what needs to happen in order for this to stop....

All 5 blackhawk players need to just drop the gloves and beat the detroit players. Let them call 5 game misconducts. The next face-off, do the same, with maybe some slashes to the knees. Continue this until the game has to be forfeited, the chance of beating them when the refs are siding with them is near impossible anyway. But the key is to injure thier team, so the much anticipated SC rematch is ruined.

At the press conference, say "WE play these guys 8 times a year, we see what happens, and we are tired of playing on uneven ice. Since you (Bettman and Wolkom) turn a blind eye to this, We felt like we need to expose this injustice to the rest of the league."

Kind of like, nothing will happen until someone dies, well maybe someone will have to die in order for people to make changes.

This was posted on one of the Chicago Forums. It speaks for itself.

  10. Ovechkin is the best GOAL SCORER...but that's it. I can't believe I even wasted my time reading what you guys had to write...wow. Ovechkin is complete??? WTF are you watching?? He is the most selfish player in the NHL. Wow. You guys aren't fans and clearly you just dont like Crosby. Anyway...Crosby will run you over in the cup.

    Good DAY

Your pretty funny! Yes you did waste your time. Please do not do it again!

PS. That is funny thought you gave me! Crosby sitting in the cup trying to run somebody over. I think the the only thing that will happen is that Kronwall hit him and he will fall out of the cup!!!!

  11. yes sir 12mil raped up in goalies. idont care who the wings have to score on. but by the way "Q" put huet back in net in the 3rd makes it seem like he was building confidence in him for his start in game 5.

I thought Huet was better in the third but still looked shaken a bit. I dont thing he was ready to play behind a Chicago team that was having a meltdown. Bad time to be thinking about revenge. Chicago should have been more concerned about helping out Huet.

  12. "He will be remembered as a major part of the success, not as a burden."

Great point! He is part of the success. An important part. This fact is overlooked by many. He is one part of a team that keeps winning. It is amazes me that some think they win in spite of his abilities. He has proven he can elevate his part when needed. Again, most goalies can not do this. That is part of what makes average goalies average and elevates the rest to elite.

  13. Wings never traded him...technically. He was put on waivers after we got Hasek and Islanders picked him up in the waiver draft.

I thought Ozzie made the playoffs every year away from Detroit? He did decent away from Detroit.

Thanks, grammar is one of my weaknesses. My wife says the same thing. Any how!

Thanks for the correction! You are right. I forgot the Wings put him on waivers. It just makes Osgood's story more interesting.

He did. He also proved he could play on a team that was less talented.

  14. OK, I guess Brodeur too.

    1991 Vince Riendeau

    1992 Ed Belfour

    1993 Felix

    1994 Arturs Irbe

    1995 Martin Brodeur

    1996 Patrick Roy

    1999 Patrick Roy

    2000 Patrick Roy

    2001 Felix

    2003 Giggy

    2004 Kipper

    2006 Giggy

Of those, only Brodeur and Roy can truly be classified as elite goaltenders, IMO.

Hasek carried Buffalo on his back. In my opinion, qualifies as elite? Possibly

  15. If Ozzie's career had ended in 2001 I think you would have to question his inclusion on anyones list of "elite" all-time goalies. However it didn't he went out and played three respectable seasons, albeit not difference makers, then came home. Since he's been here he has proved that not only is he a game clutch goalie with elite statistics but he is a Red Wing through and through.

Amazing is the fact that he came back to a team that traded him away. Sat on the bench behind Hasek. (Note: Haseks my favorite goal tender) Came in to the playoffs in 2008 ready to go after knowing he was not the man to start and just dominated. Even the Dominator had to be impressed. The numbers do back that statement up. That shows mental toughness a lot of flash in the pan goaltenders do not have.

  16. BTW Drummerboy,

Welcome to the site and good first thread!

Thanks, I have been a fan of the game for many years now. After reading that idiotic post by PuckStopsHere my blood was boiling! It has Been a long time since read post so, Hmm, beyond clueless. Well, it inspired me to post. I never have been a huge Osgood fan but his career speaks for itself. His contributions to the game itself rise above his stats.
