  1. Poor Aflac. Did we make him mad, or did he just go get a life? :P

No prediction tonight, aside from the fact that they will show up playing a lot better than the first perry-odd vs. the Rags on Monday. This trend of waiting for the third to wake up and play is for the birds. I think they are just in a little mid season doldrum, or something, this cannot continue.

I would love to see a great effort tonight, and yes, let's run up the score to about 10-0 and make Whine cry.

  2. I wouldn't deny that they can play hockey, they're just kind of...creepy.

I am delighted, as a female hockey fan, that the Higher Power of your choice chose to make two of Henrik Ludqvist (twin brother Joel is a soccer star) and Teemu Selanne (identical twin Paavu plays hockey in Finland). Chris and Peter Ferraro, twin offspring of Chicken Parm Ray Ferraro, are not bad to look at,either.

    The Sedins... well...

    How shallow am I?? :P

  3. IPB Image

haha i love fedder, but you have to admit he does look like a pretty boy

He looks a bit like Legolas in that pic. :P

I loved Feds as a Wing, and wish he had never left. If a hockey player could be called "beautiful," that word described him when he gathered the puck and danced it down the ice, usually to set up or score a goal. He was poetry in motion, when he wanted to be.

Hate to say it, but Feds learned the hard way that he needed his comrades in red (wings) to be stellar. I still like him, but I guess we don't need him anymore. :(

  4. I prefer the GDT, but that's just me. The only issue with the GDT is the server stalling on us all the time -- usually just as something interesting happens to comment on, and by the time it comes back, who cares?? :P

I did the chat a couple of times, but some of the participants were so off-topic, I logged out and went back to the GDT.

Again, just my experience. I would try it again, if you all want to.

  5. It's a horse. I was pulling for Barbaro too, and I was disappointed he didn't make it, especially considering the really unfortunate break of bad luck that brought him here in the first place. But I can't understand the people that get all caught up in it and write letters to the horse and stuff. Not like, "Dear owners of Barbaro, sorry about your horse, hope he makes it OK," I mean more like, "Dear Barbaro, Love you, get well soon, signed, your biggest fan!"

And, pardon my ignorance on horses, but, they can lie down, right? I'm sure there's a good reason, but why don't they just keep the horse off its feet 'til it heals? Obviously having to bear half a ton of weight is bad for healing.....why not keep him hoisted in a sling when he's not exercising or have him just park it in the stables for a while instead of standing all the time?

I didn't get into the get-well card thing, either, but Barbaro was a beautiful animal, and special. He never lost a race, and finished 6 lengths ahead of the also-ran in the Derby. I am not sure when that has happened before, but certainly not in my memory. The owners and vets treated this horse like a the special athlete he was, and tried to save him, for no other reason than they appreciated and loved him. They knew he'd never race again. He was slated to live out his life, stud or not, in comfort on their horse farm.

Anyway, the reported $1.2M raised in a fund for Barbero's care paid for a rehab area, exercise pool, and improvements to the veterinary surgery clinic where he was treated. They did keep him in a special sling, by the way, that's pretty standard for such large animal injuries. Horses sleep standing up because the pressure of their weight when they founder (lie down and can't get up) can cause damage to internal organs. They can lie down, of course, but normally do not when they are well.

  6. Unfortunately, many markets do not have access to Versus. This drives my dad crazy--he lives in the Williamston area (outside Lansing), and even digital cable there does not have Versus yet, so he cannot watch the Tour de France.

As for the All-Star Game, I couldn't care less about it. It doesn't really matter in the context of the Red Wings. I imagine a lot of people don't watch simply because the game has no stake in anything substantial.

true, it took my cable company two years to put OLN (VS) on the digital tier, and it's still not on the analog system her in Austin. If you want hockey, you have to have digital cable in order to get Center Ice, so shell out the bucks! The cable system my friends in Dallas are on doesn't have Versus yet, either. I guess they assume if you live in Dallas, you would only want to ever see the Stars on FSN Southwest, right? :P

Ditto on the ASG, who cares?

But as for the future of hockey in the US, they're not making it any easier to draw in new fans when they make the game inaccessible to viewers at large.

  7. Here's another name that I thought of earlier, but forgot all about until Spector brought it up; Marco Sturm. He's struggling pretty badly on the Bruins, but he's got great wheels and would definitely address Detroit's speed issues while adding some scoring punch up front. He's a UFA next season.

I'll buy that, I liked Sturm a lot when he was a Shark and think he'd do well in Detroit.

  8. Bringing back LaPenalty would fit Holland's M.O.. ;)

I think this would lend more credence to the potential of acquiring a player of the ilk of a Tkachuk, Guerin, Bertuzzi or -- as St. James suggests -- Forsberg.

That's what I was thinking, almost to a t. It definitely fits with Kenny's "once a Wing, always a Wing" strategy. :P

Can I have Feds back, too, in that case? :tomato:

  9. Completely random, but some of you might enjoy figure skating. Jozef Sabovcik is a friend of mine and he's going to be on TV today (Sunday) in a Kristi Yamaguchi special at 3:00 PM Central time, on NBC.

Jozef is the bronze medalist from the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo (the same year Scott Hamilton won Gold) in men's figure skating. Jozef is still an exceptional athlete and a wonderful person, I've known him for about 10 years.

If you enjoy professional skating, or know of Jozef, try and catch the special today. His wife tells me it will be re-broadcast later on, on the Style network, but I never watch that channel. No style, I guess.
