I realize that many people on this forum weren't born yet when the Red Wings were a bad team. There's a great deal of pride in the accomplishments of one's team, especially when it is improvement over the recent past.
After a number of good years, one tends to take it in stride and expect that the prior results will continue, whereas teams with a history of falling short will show their excitement over small achievements.
And so, in many ways, the Wings fans of today are like adults who are so busy striving for the Big Prize that we fail to stop and appreciate the lesser accomplishments that we achieve on our way to the Big Prize. And the Blues fans are like children who still announce to the entire household, "I made poopoo in the potty!"

As long as Bertuzzi continues to put up a point here and there and play a physical game, I think he fits well into the lineup. Cleary, on the other hand, is rapidly declining. I think he is really expendable, and we should seek out a younger grinder in favor of him. Plenty will be available at a cheaper price tag.
We pay Franzen as much as we do for his playoff performance. If he fails to perform this postseason, I see no reason to keep his lazy ass around. Guy could be a physical force if he really wanted to be. He loses countless amounts of puck battles along the boards to little s***s like Kane on a nightly basis. But to be realistic, lets say he has a decent postseason and sticks around.
If Ken was relieved of his duties at the end of year and Bring Back the Bruise Bros took over, this is what I would do:
*Let Hudler walk. He played solid for a while, but he's been invisible the last few games. He'll have various offers from other teams, likely overpaying him, and I don't think he's worth any more than he is making now.
*Re-sign Lidstrom if he decides to come back. Pursue Ryan Suter if Lidstrom hangs them up.
*Trade Brad Stuart to the Anaheim Ducks for Matt Beleskey. In essence, Quincey will take his spot alongside Kronwall.
*Holmstrom retires, I'm assuming.
*Send Ericsson and Cleary to Tampa for Ryan Malone and picks
*Sign Jim Vandermeer to switch in and out with Kindl.
*Put Emmerton on waivers with the intent of sending him to Grand Rapids.
*Sign Cody McCormick and move him into the lineup when we play more aggressive teams.

It's actually a lot less of a chance than that. Just because 7 out of 25 teams since its induction have won the President's Trophy have also won the Stanley Cup has nothing to do with the actual percentage that that particular team would win the playoffs that year. Since it's a lot of math and since each series has a number of different outcomes in terms of probability, I won't explain it all, but just trust me when I say that it is definitely not a little more than a 1 in 4 chance that a team is going to win the Stanley Cup just based on history of who has won both in a single season.
Sorry, nerd moment for the night. I get where you are coming from though. Based on history, it does indicate that a little over 25% of the teams that won the President's Trophy have also won the Cup that season, but it's not a cause and effect thing in terms of the playoff format.

My 2 cents:
My girlfriend of almost 3 years got a job in Boston and I started graduate school in Ohio. Aside from my Spring Break, part of my Winter Break, and me hopefully getting an internship there in the summer, I don't see her. We decided to do long distance, which on a relationship between two people really, really sucks to not be able to see each other that much.
Comparing my situation to Stuart's makes mine look like a ******* cakewalk, and I assure you, it isn't easy. The dude is married and has children and has to deal with essentially a full time job with a short amount of leisure in the Summers in the off season. I'm sure it's pretty psychologically draining and I can totally understand his reasons for likely wanting to sign somewhere a lot closer to home. He'd at least have a home to go back to for 41 games out of the year.

Z hangs on to the puck forever, and is not a sniper or a power forward. Production down and his best days are behind him. He makes too much money for what he is bringing to the table.
Franzen is unidimensional and unimpressive.
Hudler is too small and slow for playoff hockey...
We can pull the plug on the Kindl project.
Nash is entering his prime and is a top 3 power forward in the entire league.
Nyquist has skill and seems to have good hockey sense.
Conner was impressive when he was up here.

While I confess to having watched a streamed game or two after losing the battle for control of the family TV, I don't "blame" the NHL for anything in the C&D letter. Let's not kid ourselves, unauthorized streaming of copyrighted programming is blatantly illegal. It doesn't matter if it's "for profit" or done as a service for fellow fans. I'm sorry that you no doubt had the daylights scared out of you when you opened the letter, but could you really not see this coming? You registered a domain that screams "Hey, free illegal streaming of Red Wings games over here!!!!" I mean, dude......!
It's also not a Crosby-lovin'-Bettman thing. Show me one major sporting body that doesn't defend their broadcasts in such a manner.

Yesterday, I received a cease and desist email from an NHL attorney ordering me to stop any and all unauthorized streaming of NHL copyrighted works. With the recent arrest of a Comstock Park, MI man for copyright infringement, I have made the difficult and unfortunate decision to stop streaming NHL games. I am expecting my first child in August and I cannot get arrested, especially over something like this. I would like to thank the letsgowings community for always linking to the site in the GDT and being grateful and appreciative fans. I hope you enjoyed what I was able to provide. I would have loved to continue providing the service, but you can thank the NHL for ruining the party.
