Shanny exemplified the blue collar mentality of Detroit. He was a lunch pail guy. he came to work and did it all. He scored, he fought. He endeared himself quite well to the Detroit Faithful. He seemed like a throwback to old school hockey. He was the prototypical power forward.

I hate to say this but I loved the physicality of the clutch and grab era. Today's players aren't warriors, they are wimps in comparison. I enjoyed the devastating hits of Vladdy and Scott Stevens. I enjoyed the fury of fists from Kocur and Probert. I miss that kind of hockey. Vladdy was a throwback. He was a player who could have not only survived but thrived in Gordie's heyday.

I don't know if this will be considered blasphemy or heresy, but as a defenseman I think Vladdy was better than Lidstrom. Lidstrom had the better all around game, but Vladdy was the man. He wasn't really that big either, but he could sure dish out the punishment.

The Wings when playing fairly decently can play and beat pretty much any team. But when they have to play against their opponent and the refs they are going to have a hard time winning regardless of how they are playing.

If I am Red Wings management and we go down 3-0, I say goon it up in game 4. If we can't beat them, beat them! Put in Tollefson and May, and tell Cleary, Ericcson, Bertuzzi, Abdelkader, Helm, Stuart, Kronwall, hell even Osgood to go out and punish them. Beat the holy hell out of San Jose.

Danny boy is a heart and soul guy. A blue collar lunch pail kinda guy. Teams don't succeed w/o guys like him. You could just as easily see him going to work the assembly line at Ford. I hate to be Negative Nancy, but as nice as 100 pt seasons are, the true measure of this franchise now is not anything in the regular season. As Wings fans, are expectations should be much higher, as in Stanley Cup or bust. The teams we have had for the last 15-20 years were Stanley Cup contenders. So, yes, I will break out the golf clap applauding 100 pts, but I want to celebrate in June!
