Who has been the Red Wings MVP in the last 25 years?
Nevermind replied to shocky2002's topic in General
Lidstrom. He was our most important player during both the Yzerman/Fedorov and Datsyuk/Zetterberg eras. And he's the only one of the five who could be considered the best at their position for a lengthy period of time. -
I would go with DeKeyser, but I'm guessing it'll be Abdelkader. Interestingly, when one of Datsyuk or Kronwall was injured this year, Blashill opted to not give the other "A" to anyone else. So we only had one alternate during those games.

Quine is playing on a line with Tavares and Okposo. He's been nearly a point-per-game player in the AHL the past couple of seasons. Drafted by us in 2011. Re-drafted in 2013 by NYI because we didn't sign him. Why did we not sign him?
-
I agree with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Drafting superstars that late is like winning the lottery. But what about the other quality undersized European forwards we've drafted? Namely Filppula, Hudler, Tatar, Nyquist, and perhaps Pulkinnen if he gets better. Even in North America, Helm and Abdelkader turned out to be solid picks. Larkin hopefully becomes elite, but he was picked relatively high. We haven't really drafted similarly valued defenders. Kronwall turned out to be a solid, if unspectacular, #1 d-man. But after him, Quincey and Ericsson are the next best--and both have had severe growing pains and still aren't exactly success stories. Marchenko is a solid 3rd pairing type who might be able to be a shutdown type on the 2nd pair one day. Smith and Kindl have been disasters in their development.
-
I disagree. We clearly have trouble identifying hockey sense in young defensemen. Otherwise, you could call our success in drafting smaller, undersized European forwards luck as well. Lidstrom and Konstantinov were picked 53rd and 221st overall, respectively. Any team could have drafted them.
-
4 actually: Suter, Weber, Josi and Jones. Suter and Jones were early draft picks, so we can't really compare. But Josi and Weber were second rounders.Meanwhile, our first round picks, Kindl and Smith, will likely be healthy scratches when everyone's healthy.

Honestly Nyquist may have dove there...but goal!

You don't think he'll stick around at least one more year to play in the new arena?
-
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to see him play much this preseason. I'm sure some other members on this board haven't either. So it'd be great if those of you who've watched him can provide some analysis on his play style and potential ceiling. From my limited viewings, he reminds me of Antoine Vermette, but with hopefully higher upside. Also sort of like a faster Toews with not-as-good hands. It seems like he's great at rushing the puck up the ice, but could work on his shot and strength in the corners. Is this accurate?

Curtis Glencross regrets taking hometown discount
Nevermind replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
The article never said he's broke or was reckless with his money. Just his sentiment that he could have cashed in on his last big contract instead of taking a discount. -
Help. Seeking DRW management team contact

What's your educational background, if you don't mind me asking? That could be a unique way to present your qualifications. -
He had to sit out the second half of the 2013-14 season due to "academic issues". After seeing Smith dominate offensively at the college level but look dumb as a rock in the NHL, I hope we're not getting a right-handed version of the same thing.
-
Pretty much exactly what I was gonna say. Parise is also by far the most likeable of the three in terms of grit, leadership and character as well.
-
Doesn't Dallas need quality defensemen a lot more desperately than forwards? Not sure what Nill is going for with Sharp and his $5.9 million cap hit when they already have Benn, Seguin and Spezza. I guess Chicago swapped Oduya with Daley, but their forward depth isn't what it was last year.

Signed Gustav Nyquist signed 4-Year Deal $4.75 mill AAV
Nevermind replied to e_prime's topic in General
Good deal. 55 point players are already worth that much these days. He should improve from here. -
Signed Brendan Smith re-signed 2 yrs $2.75 mill AAV
Nevermind replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
Someone as dumb as Smith shouldn't have access to that kind of money. -
Dumb move. We're not hurting for cap space next season and now Weiss is on the books for 6 seasons. If Weiss still didn't improve under Blashill, we could have done the same thing next year for a more reasonable penalty over 4 seasons rather than 6.

Bad trade for Buffalo unless they've agreed to terms for an extension with O'Reilly already.
-
Giordano Brodie Hamilton Russell Wideman That's pretty incredible.
-
Jeremy Roy seems like a good choice at #19. Said to be a smart, reliable defenseman with good character and work ethic.

Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick
Nevermind replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
Both Kesler and O'Reilly are excellent defensively, but they're very different players. Kesler is physical and a good skater with a hard shot, while O'Reilly never hits and is surprisingly only an average skater for such a good two-way forward. O'Reilly does play a more intelligent game though. I'd only give up Mantha for O'Reilly if we know we can sign him to a reasonable contract extension by getting Colorado's permission to negotiate beforehand. But based on his previous two negotiations, I'm willing to bet O'Reilly has his mind set on being an extremely young and sought after UFA. -

What would you guys think of a deal revolving around Mantha and Ryan Ellis? Nashville already has Weber and Jones on the right side, and they don't really have another high-end young forward after Forsberg. I'd also be interested in Sami Vatanen from Anaheim, but I don't think they'd give him up for Mantha.
