    Penguins sign Arron Asham

It doesn't boggle the mind as much as you and GMR and other company want to believe. Did Asham even want to play here from minute one? You don't know that, nobody does. And the 4th line, as stated, is probably going to be solid with energy/grit and hopefully some offense in some form of Eaves, Abdelkader, Helm, etc. Would Asham have been nice? Sure. But it's not something to lose sleep over like you all are perceiving, which is why reactions like yours and GMR's are so hilarious to this.

The single biggest scapegoat of the Red Wings in the last 20+ years...

K... Point was to people in here probably was that he was a Red Wing and won us the Stanley Cup in 2002. I don't see anything really shady or out of whack about "how he became a Wing" if this is the case. I don't think a lot of people in here are going to care all that badly about how it "all went down" or whatever. Nope, I don't remember it.

K... While I have little doubt he did much to make the goaltending bruhaha that season any easier, I fail to see how this makes him out to be an extra bad person or whatever like you are trying to make him out to be. I'm not from a hockey oriented climate, I doubt I'd find any such articles at my local libraries. You have a link/source to that speech as well? And he could've easily been brick-headed and let his ego get in the way and wanted to keep all the money after being asked to sacrafice...

Lilja: Red Wings only team to offer contract

He wants to be a top-4 d-man and more responsibilities. Whether fans think that is legitimate or not or that he deserves that, it is what he wants, and with more responsibilities often yield more money naturally. He's probably not going to get the with the Red Wings and would remain the 5th or 6th d-man here. It's not greedy or bad or out of line business wise, it's what he's currently striving for. I'd love for Lilja to have a change of heart and perhaps take less and compete for a 5th/6th spot with Salei or Ericsson or whomever. In the end, I don't blame him though for wanting an increased role and wish him the best, whether it be with the Red Wings or overseas.

Link/source? Regardless of if you are making this up or not, Hasek should still be given credit for sacrificing money back when he easily could've said it's my money, I'm keeping it. When Fedorov left, it wasn't just him leaving at the time which aggravated a lot of Wings fans I think. The whole deal of holding out in 1998, and the perception whether it is right/wrong or fair/unfair that he doesn't always have the best work ethic or coasts contributed to the disliking of him leaving. That, and at the time of leaving still being offered a boatload of money and rejecting it, whether you or anybody else thinks it is his fault or management's fault for him not returning (that whole story we'll never fully know). I see both sides. I'm sure he had his reasons for leaving. And whether the perception of the work ethic is fair/not, I think it isn't all that far out there in left field to say he coasted sometimes. At the same time though, without him in either 1997, 1998 or 2002, it would've been difficult winning those Cups. He obviously wasn't the sole reason they won it, but he certainly contributed plenty during those years.

The single biggest scapegoat of the Red Wings in the last 20+ years...

Agreed on Hasek. I'll get to that shortly. Joseph was never fully appreciated here, and it was a shame. At the time, definitely a good signing. Heck, even now in the grand scheme of things, it probably was. There was little doubt he was very solid overall in his first year in 2003. His numbers were generally low, etc. However, the very few goals he let in, there were some softies at the worst times. Now, given how nuts Giguere played out of his mind (pad jokes or not) and understanding that pretty much any goalie will give up a gaffer every now and then, I was all for Joseph coming back, and definitely not pinning the first round playoff loss solely on him. Enter Hasek now. I think a lot of people don't take into consideration that after he won it all in 2002, he probably still had plenty of decent years left in the NHL. I was surprised he already hung them up. So, I can understand his desire to play again in 2004 after being away and Wings management wanting to go with him since he played so well in winning the Stanley Cup for Detroit, and possibly management thinking that Joseph might not cut it given the soft goals he gave up, fair or unfair. (just my opinion on Joseph/mgmt. when all this sprang up, I'm not stating it as fact and I'll re-emphasize that the series loss to Anaheim wasn't solely Joseph's fault) No matter which goalie you were a fan of or hated back then or whoever you wanted to give the scapegoat, anger, or sympathy treatment to whether it was Joseph, Hasek, or Legace, in the end Hasek wasn't fit to play at the time, thus yielding to just Joseph and Legace. The Hasek exit in 2004 was a shame and things ended on bad terms there, I don't think he did much to make the goaltending situation any easier but I understand his desire to play and pretty much anybody can tell you he's as intense and motivated in terms of game play as they come. He did personally forfeit a good bit of his salary after the bad dropout, I have to give him kudos for that, that takes a lot of guts. Nobody could've predicted the firestorm that was 2004 goaltending with Hasek being as injured as he was, then Joseph eventually getting injured, etc. In the end, I think blame goes partially to Hasek for not realizing he wasn't fully healthy to give it a go that season (not sure if that's really fair blame or not or if he was healthy then the groin or whatever just went complete south after he briefly played, etc.) and Wings management for not fully getting a handle on his health. It was a shame Joseph never seemed to be fully appreciated here and I give him kudos for sticking through it all.

    Hitting and Winning

There's just too many considerations to consider than to just ham it up on the amount of hitting/winning alone. As stated, the Wings usually play puck-possession which usually yields less hits. I think pretty much anybody in here can appreciate a 3rd or 4th liner who isn't as gifted offensively but can grind and hit and be a pest creating energy for others and ramping up the hitting department. However, all of us can probably list plenty of examples where if you just try to knock the snot out of people every play, it probably yields to more penalties, possible goonery, etc. Hitting/energy definitely plays an important part in helping win games, but it doesn't help much when you don't have some good combination of goaltending and skill/offensive threat either.
