Is the Stanley Cup really the hardest trophy in all of pro sport?

They are all difficult to obtain, just depends on your terms of hard or grinding. No need to elaborate on the NHL, we all know the wear/tear of it. I'll lay out some others. NBA - I know it's not many's cup of tea in here, mine either, I barely watch it until the playoffs start but it gets entertaining the closer you get to the Finals. Similar season to the NHL in terms of number of games played and length. Could make a case that it is difficult to win a championship in that regard. NFL - The least amount of games in any league but arguably the most physical and wear/tear league out there. What most the players have to put their bodies through at least 16 games and in practices for most of the week leading up to the game is very demanding. A lot like the NHL, if you can get hot at the right time you can win it all, low playoff seeds have won in recent years (Green Bay, Pittsburgh Steelers, etc.). Doesn't make it right/wrong, easier/more difficult to win to me, just how the playoffs are determined and regardless of your seed, the season is still a grind. MLB - Probably the least demanding physically or at least in terms of contact, but could easily make a case for the most grinding/travel as you are constantly on the road and play 160+ games a season, often in hot weather. That's a ton of games and the playoffs are probably the most difficult to make since only 8 teams make it to the postseason I believe out of 30ish.

The L.A. Kings: One and Done or Dynasty?

Likely have touched on what others have already said, but barely skimmed this thread. Dynasty would be a huge, huge, huge stretch to begin with. And even before the salary cap and new rules and standings were put in place with 3-point games creating more parity in the league, pretty hard to be considered a dynasty. (Islanders of the late 70s/early 80s, Edmonton of the late 80s, Pitt of the early 90s, Detroit and Colorado of the late 90s/early 2000s, New Jersey could be defined as dynasties in loose terms and your own subjective determinations) Consistent contenders to possibly win another Cup or two or at least make the playoffs on a consistent basis for the near future? Absolutely, they got the roster at present time. Dynasty? Likely not and it's a wee bit early to suggest whether it is way out in left field or not.

Darren McCarty seeks protection from former pals

Just goes to show that at least one constant in life is people naturally change - have new jobs, have to move onto different things, whatever. Sometimes you aren't going to be as close to somebody else in the future due to natural courses of events like a new job, lifestyle, meeting a significant other, whatever. Also goes to show unfortuantely that some fans just can't keep themselves in check and go way off the deep end in their fandom or whatever to where others might get affected or hurt. While we all like to have fun in whatever definitions we define, I hope McCarty can keep his social/entertainment life at low decibles and enjoy more quiet family time.

    superstition

If you are superstitious, great. If it helps you as a fan or player with peace of mind or consistency/routine or whatever, keep doing it. I get its factors in terms of the psychological sense. Is it the one or only thing that takes you over the top or the reason you win a game or whatever? No. Just something I never really think about much or make more than it is.

    Tim Thomas.

Was talking about his decision to skip the White House event, I don't know why or what the reasons are or the $$$'s of him skipping out playing a year with his employer, we are talking about different things.

    Tim Thomas.

Zero sense this makes. As for the political dealie/skipping the White House celebration, I think it's a bit of a reach to see how these two specific things are connected. Happened months and months ago so I don't see why it is reason to be brought up when him possibly skipping out has probably little or nothing to do with politics/government. And as for him skipping out, was his choice and his business. Don't really agree with it but I understand and respect his decision. All I'm going to say on that since I pretty much have given up talking politics in depth a long time ago.

Zetterberg. Datsyuk and Kronwall will keep on keepin' on with the A's, I guess another A might be given to Flipper or Holmstrom if he's still with the team.

    Excited and Optimistic

This team was moving along quite well for a division title or at worst a 4th seed, then injuries mounted up unfortuantely. While I wouldn't have objected to being aggressive at the trade deadline, getting one or two more players likely wouldn't have solved the depth issues due to injuries. And nobody can prepare for the absurd amount of injuries the Wings had at the time, not the best GM in the world, not a little league coach, nobody. And lack of motivation over a 20 year period just doesn't appear over the final season magically due to others getting injured. You do something for a lengthy amount of time, it is natural that you are going to think about trying something different after a while. They have made the playoffs 21 years in a row. These days in the NHL, no matter how much we don't like it (and I don't either a lot), a good bit of times now it's just make it and anybody has a good shot at making a deep playoff run - regardless of seeding. You don't have to look no further than this season with the Finals being a 6/8 matchup, or 2006 when the Wings got upset in the 1st round, it was a 5/8 matchup in the Finals. This team, while things will now be different, still has a solid core and plenty of money to get free agents this off season.

Does Size Matter in the NHL?

To certain degrees. If you are looking to be one that drops the gloves on a somewhat consistent basis, then yes, size matters a good bit. If you're going to get a role on 3rd/4th line or be a shut-down defenseman, yes size matters. Work ethic though, regardless of how big or small you are, is most important.

Hasek wants to play in the NHL again

Wouldn't see a problem with that. Keeping fit, when he's been able to, has never been a problem for Hasek, so I wouldn't be shocked if he's still in decent enough playing shape to at least give the NHL another shot. If he can do it, more power to him, but to the Wings situation, it isn't something I'm not getting too overly excited about, nor dismissing. It's not like Howard isn't going to not start anytime soon.

#8 Los Angeles Kings vs. #3 Phoenix Coyotes

I zonked out at the beginning of the 3rd period (I typically wake up around 4:00/4:15 am so I needed to get to bed - was around 10:00ish my time at the time), had no clue how this all transpired until a few hours ago, I figured just another sudden death OT goal, must've been exciting stuff that I missed. Anyways, pretty shocked that there is no hearing for Brown on this. Was it intent to injure? No. Was it knee-on-knee? No. Was it a hard/awkward play? Without question. I honestly think it was more of a bad hit elbow-wise than the knee, I would've debated on giving him a game or two suspension on the elbow hit. As for the Coyotes losing it in the heat of the moment, can ya really blame them? For those that are saying Doan and Smith are crybabies or hypocrites (and we are certainly familiar with Doan the past few seasons), how would you have liked to be in their position right at that moment, to lose that way? And sure, they might have/probably would have ended up losing the series anyway given the deficit they were in. I get that 100%. But still, in that moment, to lose a game and be eliminated in that fashion, how would you feel on the losing end? I don't blame Doan or Smith or Hanzal going apes**t whatsoever on the refs and being pissed off. Did the refs lose them the game in the grand scheme of things? No, but they screwed that hit up by not giving some kind of penalty - elbowing, kneeing, roughing, whatever. And it was a big miss/part of the game in the end. You be the judge on what should have been called/how long, or if anything at all. To compare/contrast in a different sport where a ref made a bonehead call - I went to state basketball playoff game a few years ago for the high school I went to, a road game at that. We scored with about 20 seconds left in the game to take a 1-point or 1-basket lead (I don't remember the exact final score but I think we won by no more than 3 points). Next possession, the point guard for the other team gets called for carrying/palming the ball. While I was glad my school then eventually won the game, it was a chicken-s**t way to lose. If he "carried" the ball, everybody else did that game (and it wasn't even close to being called once that game) and that happens every game. I myself was astonished that such a call was made cause no sane person would've called it. Needless to say, parents/students/fans of the other school were going beserk at the refs and threatening them after the game as I went back to my car. The coaches and some players right after the final buzzer went nuts as well. While I don't condone that stuff, I don't blame them whatseover for being pissed off in the heat of the moment. I would have been ticked as well if I was on the short end of it.
