    Is Mike Babcock overrated?

5 first round exits in a row. Only gotten past 1st round in the playoffs 3 times since 2009 (THAT'S A DECADE...) and lost each time. Can never seem to deliver in game 7s. (Lost game 7 against Pittsburgh in 2009, San Jose in 2011, Chicago in 2013, Tampa Bay in 2015, Boston in 2018, and now Boston again this year 2019) Had a stacked roster in 2005/06 season as 1st seed team and lost to Edmonton in 6 games (8th seed). I imagine this thread may piss off some Babcock fans but I really do think this guy is overrated. I'd say I started feeling that way around 2013 after losing to Chicago and then the Tampa series. But his tenure with Toronto seems to solidify it more and more. It also boggles my mind that with players like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom in their primes he managed to only win 1 stanley cup. Meanwhile Bowman maximized what he was given and won 3, Quenneville managed to get 3 with Toews/Kane/Keith, Daryl Sutter got 2 with Kopitar/Doughty.

    Is Mike Babcock overrated?

I remember Babcock’s last year with the Wings, my friends who are Leafs fans kept saying how “Babcock is going to sign with Leafs and they’ll dominate the league blah blah blah”. And my response was “you guys are in for a disappointment if you get your hopes up that much” My bet was the Leafs will not win the cup under Babcock’s current contract. I have 4 years left in it.

Keep him, Karlsson and him are friends.

    Jonas Mahon would win all.
  9. Too many speculations about how Yzerman is going to run this team. We have zero clue what’s going to happen. Just sit tight and not have set expectations. See how the guy does it. He may bring us Karlsson, he may draft Cozens and that’s it. Maybe he trades Helm and Nielsen. Maybe he does none of that. We have zero idea and he’s given us zero ideas. He’s made one generic statement saying “I would have built through the draft the last few years like Holland did”. Well duh, who wouldn’t in the salary cap era..
  10. Who cares about Panarin’s loyalty issues. Detroit molds players to be better people. Look at Todd Bertuzzi. The guy almost killed someone and we gave him a chance and he now is living in Michigan as a common citizen. Panarin is a fantastic player, I hope Yzerman goes after him. Him and Larkin on a line together would be deadly and fun to watch. Honestly if we signed Karlsson and Panarin this team automatically becomes a playoff contender. Larkin, AA, Mantha and Betuzzi are already high 20, 30 goal scorers. We lack defense that's the issue and Karlsson would fix that. And in 2-3 years Cholo wud be easily a stable number 2. Getting into the playoffs to get all the youngsters playoff experience is key. I’d rather them get it now than 3 years from now. Get em the experience and win the cup eventually. We don’t want to be the Edmonton Oilers were we play the slow game and draft for 7 years but lack playoff experience and continue to suck and never make a legit cup run. Hell Zet and Dats only became the players they did because they were surrounded be good talent and had a s*** ton of playoff experience right off the bat. Took them 5 years to eventually win the cup in 08 after hard fought battles in 03 against Anaheim, 04 against Calgary, 06 against Edmonton and 07 against the Ducks, but they needed all that to go on to win in 08. Give Cholowski a Karlsson, give Larkin a Panarin. Let them thrive and dominate together.

    Is Mike Babcock overrated?

He had a stacked roster with Detroit and still wasn’t that successful though. He won a single cup, that team had the potential to win multiple cups. In his 10 years in Detroit he got passed round 2 only 3 times... Dont think he’s worth 50 million 8 years. He’s a good coach. But I don’t think he’s the best coach as some say he is. The track record speaks for it imo. I’d take Quenneville over him.

Report: Detroit to name Steve Yzerman as GM

He just gave a very generic response and said was he would have acquired draft picks too. I would do the same too. He did make a subtle remark about differences in their negotiating style. That’s huge because our contracts under Holland sucked. He made no mention of what’s going to happen moving forward. It’s all speculation until he says so/ makes decisions moving forward. I.E does he make trades? Does he push hard in free agency? He hasn’t really talked about any of that and has been vague about it. Nah that’s pure speculation. We won’t know till we see. Generally when a GM/CEO is hired (sports or corporation etc) he knows it’s expected that he brings in a new perspectives rather than an old one. Holland hung on to vets, signed untradable contracts, and was trying to build through draft and didn’t go after big time free agents. It was a safe approach. Maybe Yzerman continues the draft build similar to Holland, which is fine. I’m curious to see how he handles vets, kids, contracts, free agency and trades.

    Is Mike Babcock overrated?

But like... what playoff successes? He lost to 8th seed Edmonton in 06. Won in 08 but then lost in 09 finals. after being up 3-2 in the series Then never made it past round 2 after that year. I'd say he was great between 07-10 and then faded out. I also think he's a great season coach. But I don't know if the guy is as reliable in the playoffs as some of the other coaches in the league. Auston Mathews only played 18 minutes tonight...?

How exactly is he going to run the team similarly to Holland? He told you this over the phone too? You and hockeymom got some phone call basis on these dudes that I’m missing out on.

    2019 Draft

But kids these days are better than Eric Lindros. I think Yzerman will have a positive impact on these youngsters. And I think it will be fair for everyone involved. He’s done an excellent job with that cap in Tampa, I think he’ll continue it in Detroit.

    2019 Draft

Yeah I think he’s a strict dude. From player interviews even as a Captain no one in the locker room f***ed around with him. Too much respekkk. Like I very much doubt AA or Mantha are going to demand some dumb ass expensive contract under Yzerman. I don’t think they’ll have the balls to fight it, if that makes sense. Anyways, we’ll see.

    2019 Draft

I think Yzerman is a little more brutal. He fired a coach and hired Jon Cooper. I don't think Holland has ever fired a coach; not even Dave Lewis. Yzerman signed team friendly contracts with one of the best forwards in the league, the best defenseman in the league and the current best forward in the league. Yzerman seems to have a little more "it's my way or the highway" type of approach. Holland more or less is a bit more passive. I think Yzerman agrees with Holland in the sense that it's best to stock pile picks at this point in time. But beyond that I think Yzerman will be much better at cap management and cutting the bulls*** in the team. I.E if Blashill isn't cutting it, I bet he'll be gone within a year or two.
