Standings, the good the bad and the ugly

1-8-1 last 10 games, tied with Ottawa who has a game in hand on Detroit, Arizona and Buffalo have winning records over their last 10 and both have a game in hand over Detroit and Vancouver. 4 behind the Canucks, 6 behind 'Yotes, 7 behind the Sabres. I believe in the tank, keep fallin' for Dahlin.

    Wings Interested In Resigning Green

I don't think Green signs here for 2 years, he's going to want at least 3, and if Holland is still calling the shots I think he's getting a full NTC on top of it. I firmly believe that you sign guys like Booth and Witkowski as stop gaps during a rebuild, not Green. There's no benefit finishing 6th from the bottom as opposed to the bottom 3

Green isn't going to make the team a contender, or even a pretender. Unless he signs a one year deal, unlikely, he's not going to be traded at the deadline next year, so the "trade chip" argument is out the window. After that "eh, whatever" moment on Vegas' 2nd goal tonight, I want him even less than I did before. I'd rather sign a border like NHLer and tell the rookies that there's one open spot, fight for it like you're the 3rd monkey in line for the Ark and it's starting to rain. If nobody wins the spot, let the vet have it. Beyond that, they don't need a full rebuild. They need a couple years to shed the albatrosses Holland hung around their necks, an elite D, a good young goalie, a good coach, and possibly one more high end forward if you don't think Matha and Larkin are good enough. They don't need a 30 year old 2nd pair defenseman when all of their other d-men are 2nd and 3rd pair guys. PS, I highly doubt if they get to an actual respectable level that a free agent is going to say "well, I WAS going to sign with you, but you didn't re-sign Mike Green a couple years ago and you traded some older players in faovr of younger ones. So even though your future looks promising, I'm going to go somewhere else."

Somehow there are 3 teams in the East worse than Detroit, all 3 in the same division. Detroit is 7th from the bottom. They have a decent shot of catching Montreal and Edmonton, maybe Vancouver, and an outside chance at Ottawa. Buffalo and Arizona (how they're still in that City is a testament to Bettman's stubbornness and machinations) are well beyond catching. Odds are Detroit will be 5, 6, or 7 in chances at #1 overall. Buffalo, Ottawa, and Arizona will probably have the 3 best.

But why not give yourself the best chance to get a high pick instead of hoping you get lucky? The goal should be the Cup, not be good enough to barely miss or make the playoffs. Signing Green does the latter, not the former.

Svechnikov being called up from GR

I remember when players were supposed to take care of themselves and watch for hits. Most of the guys who played in the 80s and 90s wouldn't be able to play now, including Konstantinov and Stevens.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

Simply put Mrazek wasn't going to be brought back. IDK if there was some off ice stuff too, or if it was just him being pretty consistently bad for so long, but they had no intention of qualifying him, and at that point the odds of him returning were nil. So it was trade him now or lose him for nothing later. Regardless of how you feel, about him, Holland was ready to move on.

    2018 draft , who's your 2 picks in 1stR

Unless other D and C available are clearly worse, I'd avoid a smallish d-man, they have way too many of those type already. I want the player with the most upside, preferable a D or C, but if a winger is clearly better, take him. I DON'T want a Rasmussen/Sheahan type "well, he might not have as much of a ceiling but we're pretty sure he'll be in the NHL in 5 years."

what does that have to do with Green and Daley?

Green isn't below average, but he's a lot closer to average than good. Honestly, the games I've seen, Daley has looked better. He hasn't scored as much but doesn't get the PP time either.

    Grade the deadline

What do you think of the job he did? I said earlier not trading Green for something, even a 4th rounder, would be a failure. He got potentially more than I expected for Mrazek, and the Tatar deal is potentially a good haul depending on how they use the picks, but I have a hard time believing they couldn't have gotten a conditional pick for Green based on how many games he plays and how far the team goes in the playoffs, similar to the Mrazek deal. I get the feeling Holland wants to keep him around and was looking for an excuse not to trade him in case he decided he liked his new team better.
  15. How much of that was because he was playing for a moron?

Best of a bunch of mediocre guys doesn't make him good. That's like the tallest person in Munchkin Land, the most honest person in the Senate
  18. McPhee is trying to win now, and because he has enough young players in his lineup, he can afford to trade some picks, especially if he brings in guys in Tatar's age range with them. I'm still surprised they got as much as they did for him though.
  19. Tatar and Nyquist are redundant players, moving one for the right return made sense. You trade the one who brings the most, that was apparently Tatar. I like this trade.

It depends on who is the GM. Holland is likely to give him a stupid deal, 5 years at $5 mil or something. A reasonable deal, maybe, depending on if another D can be moved. If he comes back, they have Green, Daley, Dekeyser, Kronwall, Ericsson, Jensen next year. There needs to be at least 2 open spots for rookies, and not as a reserve.
  21. I'd probably have rather seen Nyquist moved, but at the same time both are smallish one dimensional wingers, so moving either for a decent package could help in the long run. That's going to depend on good scouting and smart drafting, something Holland and the current front office haven't done a very good job of recently. Until we see what comes fromt he picks, I'll give this trade a provisional B.

    Rumors Thread

We were not "all disappointed." Most of us thought he did a decent job. I don't want Green back unless it's at a discount contract. $5 mil is too much. The goal should be getting younger, not bringing back middle of the road vets, and just because he has been the best D-man on this team doesn't mean he's not a middle of the road vet.

If Draper is the next GM, I don't think I mind it

If the point is supposed to be that staying with an organization forever makes you a better GM/scout/whatever, it's wrong.
