DickieDunn got a reaction from kliq in Official 2018 NHL Amateur Entry Draft Discussion Thread
They need D and another high end center. If they end up at #2, and Svechnikov is still easily the #2 prospect, they're going to have a decision to make. Move down and get a center or D not rated quite as high, or take a top prospect at a position of strength. I think the smart choice there would be to take Svechnikov, and then move Mantha alone, or with minimal other assets or AA plus another asset for a good young D. Or they can try to move the 2nd overall for a bigger need.
Regardless, smart teams take the best player regardless of position. If you have a D and a winger who are close, take the D, but if the winger is clearly better, take him. Then use your surplus at a position and trade for a need. Of course, Holland seems to be either unwilling or unable to do that part, but that's the smart strategy.

Konstantinov would be suspended every other game if he played like he did back then. Wussification of the USA (and Canada)

Da Process is pushing them into a better shot at #1 overall. I'm ok with that right now.

Ottawa, Buffalo, and Arizona are the only 3 ahead of them in the race to the bottom now. They could catch Ottawa in the next few games. I'd be ok with the 3rd best chance at #1 overall and guaranteed top 6.
They're 9 points out of the wildcard spot, 10 behind Boston for 3rd in the division. They'd have to jump 6 teams to get in as a wild card, 3 to end up as 3rd in the division. The sooner Holland and/or ownership concedes the season and goes into sell off mode the better.

Because he's not good there, and they have guys like Helm to do that. Let Mantha save his energy for scoring.

Green signed here for an opportunity to play on the top pair instead of the 3rd pair in Washington, the team wasn't as bad as it is now, and that was before everyone knew Blashill was an idiot. If I were Green, I'd rather go somewhere I might win the Cup.

I think DeHaan and Cole could put the team over the top... of the mediocre team list. It would ensure a middle of the pack finish for the next 5 years

More process, and don't mess with the Swedish Mafia.

Not with a capable GM. They have a core forward group. Smart drafting and/or trading can improve the D in short order.

With a legit NHL coach, and I can't see any way Blashill is brought back next year, I think Carlson would still be a legit #1 here. His point total might drop, but the roster isn't as bad as it's played. They'd need a player to replace Green, maybe even bring Green back after he's traded, but Carlson added to the defense would go a long way to solidifying it. Everyone else would slide down a notch role-wise, which would help performance.
Bottom line is a guy like Carlson is the closest thing to an elite guy they're going to get barring grabbing one in the draft, which is more luck than anything else, or a Chara-type heist in a trade.

Saying Carlson isn't a legit #1 is wrong. Is he elite, best of the best, Lidstrom/Pronger/Borque level? Nope. But he's better than almost every other d-man in the league. Name 20 who are clearly better and I'll concede that he's "just" a #2.

The only players I want brought in are guys just entering their prime through trade, or legit high end players who are 27 or 28 through free agency. I have no interest in guys 30+, or middle of the road player. Detroit has enough 2nd pair d-men. Carlson is #4 in defense scoring, plays over 26 minutes a game, plays in all situations. He's a #1. IF he makes it to free agency, and IF he wants to come to Detroit, both of which I think are unlikely, they should take him, provided they don't have to give him a stupid amount of money. 7x7 would be good.

Trade Howard, Mrazek continues to crap the bed, he leaves, and next year the goalies are a mediocre free agent and a scrub like Coreau. Sounds like a great way to get another high pick for 2019. Git-r-done Kenny!

DickieDunn got a reaction from Rick D in Rumors Thread
I agree that they should be going with a full blown youth movement. I've said that for a couple years now. Over-ripe doesn't work unless you have actual talent ahead of the kids and are winning.
I disagree that Mrazek should be playing just because. He's a headcase, and another in a long line of NHL goalies who flamed out after a hot start.

Howard's cap hit is 15th in the NHL. He's paid exactly like an average starting goalie.
Yep, I've long been a fan of trading prospects for proven players either in or just entering their prime. You don't trade them all, but some of them. What could they have gotten for Nyquist and Sproul in a package a few years ago? People are too afraid that the kid that gets traded will turn into a monster when it's more likely they turn into a middle of the road player.

DickieDunn got a reaction from kliq in Rumors Thread
Fixed that. He lost his starting job because he played bad, not because Blashill doesn't like him or there's some secret anti-Eastern European conspiracy or something. The fact that he was the #1 goalie for awhile and was given a contract matching that position is irrelevant. You don't play a player because of his contract, unless you're not committed to winning (or at least making it look like you're committed) if that player is crapping the bed on a regular basis. If his poor play is the result of his sulking, then he has no business being in the NHL anyway, and if he thinks that some other team is going to hand him a #1 job after his play going back almost 2 full years, he's insane. His only 2 options going forward are accept a backup job and try to beat out the #1 goalie for his new team or go running back to Europe.

DickieDunn got a reaction from kliq in Blashill says struggling Wings must "Trust The Process."
His process is work harder not smarter. All the forwards collapse into the middle in the D zone, which means there are no outlet passes for the D when they get the puck, which leads to turnovers because they have to either wait too long or hurry a pass, and a bad transition game when the pass does connect. Bad line management, terrible special teams, and a roster that looks increasingly like they don't have much hope of winning on a game to game basis. If the goal is to try and make the playoffs, he needs to be fired today, because every game puts them further out. If the goal is to get the best possible shot at the #1 pick, he needs to double down on everything he's doing.
BTW, am I still a hater for saying this? I was last year.

Quotes from a garbage article on a garbage site. When legit media reports this I'll believe it.

I think Holland has decided that Mrazek has no future in Detroit. If he trades him and retains some salary then at least Holland's getting something for him as opposed to not qualifying him this summer and losing him for nothing. Plus, as kliq said the salary retention does nothing to effect the cap after July 1st. It's actually a smart move if Holland's not planning on re-signing him. But I can see how you would disagree if you want to keep him.
