It’s just everyone saying they don’t know for sure yet.. which is understandable. It’s been the same process the past 3 or 4 off seasons, I’m sure. Until camp starts and he’s not there/talking at all and/or Z tells us that he can’t play, there’s no need to worry. There are just articles pointing it out because there’s nothing going on at this stage in the off season.. gotta get them sweet sweet clicks.

(I don’t know what happened to the font size there, that wasn’t intentional)

Thanks. Now every time I see the word process, I read it as PROH-SESS. I am literally annoying myself.

Bernier will take over the starter role in Detroit by mid season.

Howard will be traded at the deadline for a similar return as Vanek two years ago (3rd round pick, and a s*** prospect).

Bernier will be "the guy" going forward, until one of the kids emerge as "the next guy"...

Really? I think a healthy Howard is worth way more than that.

To be fair, there's more than a number of Canadians that I could not pick out of a crowd of Americans based on speech. Many are completely indistinguishable.

On the flipside, to me, people from Minnesota and the Dakotas sound like they're more Canadian than American.

You betcha. Fargo sounds like it takes place in Canada, doan-cha no.

So the only exposer American's have to anything Canadian is satirical comedy shows / movies? When I say that I've never heard a Canadian say "aboot", I'm talking about real people, not actors / comedians...

Newfoundlanders definitely do have an accent, but not all are the stereotypical incoherent "Newfie accent". I've met people from other parts of Canada and the US that never believed I'm from Newfoundland, because I don't have much of the thick Newfie accent, and for whatever reason they assumed we all talked the exact same. Ignorance I guess...

    Basically, Yes.

Agreed. I have never noticed an unusual accent in your posts.

I've spent about 10 minutes trying to think of any way this deal would help us.  And there is no way.  Losing our 2 fastest and younger players would cripple this team beyond what Kenny has already done.  I will stop watching games if this deal happens.

    1. This trade would never happen, and if it did, I would be the first person to demand Holland be fired.

    2. I like the part about how there has been no secrets as to how the team feels about AA's play in his own end. At least I am not the only one who thinks this.

If that trade would make you stop watching games, what would make you stop posting trolling here?

I mean if you keep catching fish in the same pond, wouldn't you keep fishing there?

The point I think @toby91_ca was trying to make though, and I agree, that there isn't a "Canadian accent". Different provinces, and even on smaller scale, different cities and towns within each province, have very different accents. The same way there isn't one "American accent". Different states, as well as cities and towns within each state have very different accents. And yeah, I've never hear a Canadian say "aboot"... I'd love to know where that stereotype originated from. Is there actually a part of Canada that talks like that?

McKenzie Brothers, " Canadian Bacon", Red Green Show. This is what Americans are exposed to regarding Canadian language and culture.

And I visited friends in Toronto and they joked about Newfies accent and how it was incoherent. Kind of like what Northern US says about the South.

Holy lowballs Batman! 4mil might be an insult. Granted, 7 mil is steep, but Brendan Smith makes 4.25...in the minors. Trouba is worth way more than that. I would go as high as 4 years at 6 mil AAV, but I think some where in the 5.25 to 5.5 range is more likely. Buff is at 7.6, and Myers makes 5.5.

Topping was often Rasmussen's line mate in Tri City's. Plays leftwing. Finished 2nd on the team behind Ras with 80 pts in 72 games.

Fresh 21 years old, so he can buy barley pops for the boys too

All but confirmed Holland will keep Ras in the AHL the entire season.

    You know he can't, right?

    AA at 24th birthday = 77 pts.

    Nyquist at 24th birthday = 12 pts.

    Debate Over.

    LOL. Literally.

    Nyquist's first 4 seasons (179 games) 59 goals, 56 assists, 115 points

    AA's first 3 seasons (172 games total) 43 goals, 33 assists, 76 points

    Nyquist's first full season (2014-2015): 82 games played, 27 goals, 27 assists, 54 points,

    AA's first full season (2017-2018): 71 games played, 16 goals, 17 assists, 33 points.

    Not. Even.Close.

Cherry picked article. Glad CRL dragged you back in. Time to have some fun again.

Rest of the article states the following:

In Athanasiou’s first two NHL seasons, his shooting percentages were 17 and 15, but that dropped to 9.4 in 2017-18 as he registered 16 goals. It’s fair to say that over a full season he should be at least a 20-goal scorer with the possibility for more.

Remember, too, that the 23-year-old missed training camp and the first 10 games in 2017 due to a contract dispute and that often leads to an underwhelming season. Now he’s locked in with a two-year, $6 million deal so should get off to a better start. On top of that, only three of his 33 points came on the power play despite averaging 1:44 PP minutes per game, so there could be an uptick there as well. The crux of Athanasiou’s breakout candidacy is in how much ice time the Red Wings (or an acquiring team) give him.

If his goals come up as expected, can his assists and ice time rise to a level that allows him to have a true breakout

    PLAYER 5on5 Points/60 Average TOI/game
    Dylan Larkin 2.27 19:51
    Anthony Mantha 1.88 17:18
    Andreas Athanasiou 1.81 15:19
    Martin Frk 1.69 10:17
    Henrik Zetterberg 1.65 19:30
    Gustav Nyquist 1.59

    17:51

Look at that AA better than Nyquist on 5 on 5. @Neomaxizoomdweebie

Inaccurate, your boy thinks AA is unwilling to be coached. That's a pretty hefty accusation for an NHL player. Not the same as "things to work on"

Didn't quote it because it didn't negate anything I said. For the thousandth time, AA needs to round out his game by working on his defense if:

    A. He wants more ice time (top 6)

    B. We want his scoring to increase as a result.

It's really up to AA. That's the frustrating part. A player's potential, or projection are totally irrelevant if he isn't getting the ice time he needs to due to being sit by his Coach. Do you really think that if he was playing the game the way he was being coached to that he would be benched? I don't. Even if his offense dried up for a stretch, he would still get ice time if he was still playing "Blashill hockey."

Pretty much what I have been saying. The article doesn't say any different.

Do we really need to discuss again why that is? Notice how Nyquist gets more ice time than AA? Wonder why?

    giphy.gif

Don't know if that is really what i said or not, and i don't feel like rehashing it. But if those were my "exact words", then that was a bad choice of words. What I should have said was "not listening to his coach."  Which is a completely reasonable think to say based on the information available.

Athanasiou never said a word.  His agent did that.  The same way Larkin's agent is probably using his Fair Market Value as leverage in that negotiation.

The difference is that AA was like one year into his NHL career, hadn't proven anything, was offered a fair deal and balked at it.

Larkin has been in the year for 3 years, has proven himself, and isn't asking for a ridiculous amount, nor is Holland coming in low. A deal hasn't been reached yet because they are working on a long term contract, greater money management and planning is required, cap hits, AAV, salary, term, bonuses, etc. Totally different situation here. They really aren't even comparable.

I sure was hoping for a more team friendly amount, I must be out of the times.

I happen to think that Mantha gave us a team friendly deal, it would be nice if we could get Dylan for around $5M. I know it's only $1M from the source, but that $1M can be helpful in giving him a better team to play for. If Larkin gets $6, you have to think that Z is LTIR almost for sure.

6 X 6 is a great deal IMO. Just think what guys of Larkin's caliber will be making in years 4-6 of that contract. He's a future 1C and likely team captain. 6 mil is beyond a bargain.

    Andreas Athanasiou, Detroit Red Wings

His explosive speed makes him exciting to watch and the offensive upside is still there — the question is whether Athanasiou’s defensive game will become strong enough that a coach can comfortably make him a top-six player.

This isn't journalism, it's complete fabrication. This guy should be fired. FAKE NEWS!

I have absolutely no problem with attaining defensemen through Free Agency and I certainly have no problem with Trevor Daley or Mike Green. (BOTH of whom were signed without giving up assets. BOTH of whom I LIKE.)

I won't discuss the shortcomings/strengths of either of these players because it's been done so ad nauseam, but I think most of us (at least the smart ones) can attest to the fact that these guys are not our current, nor future TOP GUY defensemen.  They're veteran placeholders.  They're good at what they do and service the needs of the team.  Without them we've got even bigger holes on the back end.

Granted, I, like many other LGWers (and hockey fans in general) do have a penchant for latching onto (debatable) HYPE! defensemen and over-valuing and over-evaluating their worth. We covet them like we might covet our neighbor's wife. We put together CRAZY trade packages or suggest things like OFFER SHEETING them.  We know we can't have them but we NEED them.

...and that's the thing.  We do need them. Unlike our neighbor's wife, these guys should be attainable. We just have to make the right move. ...and sure, I know that there's plenty of other factors including other suitors, wanting to play somewhere else, a better chance to win, etc. all those things factor in ...

...but for every Bogo, Wiz, Pitkanen ... there is a Yandle or Niskanen or Bouwmeester or an example for today and not yesteryear...   say...    Trouba...

That if we went out and got right now, RIGHT FREAKING NOW, would be a much bigger, impactful, etc player for this team both now and in the future than Mike Green or Trevor Daley or whatever stop gap vet you wanna put in there.

Also.  Speaking of overrated.  Drake.  *sheesh*

Absolutely agree with you here. And although its tempting, I will forego any response to the "bigger holes on the back end" part.

    Yep. He's a Canadian Kanye.
